Gemini responds:
Determining which US president has caused the most damage to the rule of law in America is a complex and often subjective matter, with historical interpretations varying significantly. However, several presidents have faced accusations and debates regarding their actions and their impact on legal norms and constitutional principles.
Key figures and actions that have been cited in discussions about damage to the rule of law include:
James Buchanan: His failure to act decisively to prevent secession and his stance on the Dred Scott ruling are seen by some as an erosion of constitutional order and a setback for civil liberties.
Andrew Johnson: His actions opposing Reconstruction and his defiance of Congress, leading to his impeachment, are viewed as damaging to the rule of law and the progress of civil rights.
Franklin D. Roosevelt: His administration's mass internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, as well as his New Deal economic policies and attempted "Court-packing" plan, have been criticized for expanding executive power and violating civil liberties.
Andrew Jackson: His defiance of the Supreme Court's ruling on the Indian Removal Act and his forceful expansion of executive power are considered examples of undermining the rule of law.
Abraham Lincoln: While leading the nation through the Civil War and preserving the Union, his suspension of habeas corpus and other actions to suppress dissent have been viewed as a curtailment of civil liberties, even in a time of crisis.
Donald Trump: His presidency has been marked by numerous legal challenges and accusations of undermining the rule of law through executive actions, attacks on the judiciary, and disregard for legal precedents. Sources suggest his administration engaged in actions like attempting to abolish birthright citizenship, dismantling civil rights protections, and targeting law firms involved in opposing his administration. Some experts also argue that his actions and rhetoric have contributed to a decline in public trust in legal and democratic institutions.
Important considerations:
Different interpretations: Historians and legal scholars often have differing perspectives on the significance and impact of particular presidential actions.
Context matters: Actions taken in times of crisis, such as the Civil War or World War II, may be viewed differently than those taken during peacetime.
Long-term consequences: The full impact of some presidential actions on the rule of law may not be fully understood for many years.
In conclusion, while there is no single answer to the question of which president has done the most damage to the rule of law, the examples above highlight some of the key actions and debates that have shaped this important discussion throughout US history.
End quote.

So Gemini does not mention Woodrow Wilson (Jim Crow racism) or Nixon, but throws in Lincoln and Rosevelt.

Politically timid. As you would expect from an AI set up to minimise the risk of partisan backlash.

Gemini had to mention Lincoln, or the Southern rednecks would respond with pitchforks. Also, had to leave out any references to Jim Crow for the same reason.

The one saving grace is "Actions taken in times of crisis, such as the Civil War or World War II, may be viewed differently than those taken during peacetime." The suspension of habeas corpus by Lincoln and Roosevelt in war conditions (and subsequently approved by Congress) can claim this defence, whereas Wilson, Nixon and Trump can claim no such crisis.

Gemini's designers understood that offending pacifists is safer than offending the Nazis among us.

Thanks Shiva, I appreciate that.

And I'll leave a quote for us to ponder.

"And how can man die better / Than facing fearful odds, / For the ashes of his fathers, / And the temples of his Gods"

AI is great at role playing, which has its use. However I think it will wind up tell people what they want to hear. More or less. If it isn't already doing so.
