![]() Meanwhile, the Australian men's team crunched Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. Australia declared their first innings closed after losing only 6 out of the ten wickets in their first innings, then took all 20 Sri Lankan wickets to still win by more than 200 runs. (The rules of cricket allow a team leading by more than 200 after the first innings to delay their second innings. Australia had a first innings lead of over 400.) |

![]() I'm talking TEST CRICKET, a genuinely international game. NFL is just a dumbed-down version of Rugby. You should pay more attention to real football, (err... 'soccer'), because the Americans are not too bad at that. The women's team are in the top teams in the world. Meanwhile, have you noticed how 'Little Brother' continues to whip your arse in sailing? The only team sports that America 'owns' are those that America invented. Except, perhaps, for 'hockey' (which we call 'ice hockey', the REAL hockey being played on turf with a ball rather than a puck). Oh, and perhaps basketball; which is just a bunch of tall guys stroking themselves. Take 100 Australians aged in their 30's at random, male and female, and the same number of females. The same with random Americans. Ask then to pick teams from among themselves in each of the top ten participatory sports in the world (as measured by number of players registered in amateur competitions), and put them against each other. The Yanks would be humiliated! Here in the Land of the Eager Echidna it's common for adults to continue to play social competitive sport on weekends. We don't 'miss the cut' at college level and then sit on the couch in front of a television screen for the rest of our lives. I was still playing competition mixed netball up to age 63, before my heart went into fibrillation. The Dreaded Black Wombat (age 72) is playing Monday Night Ladies Competition tennis even as I tap out this post. |

![]() I remember an interview of Tod Blackadder (All Blacks captain) some years ago, when the journo said "You guys play Rugby as though your lives depend on it." Toddie just smiled and shook his head. "No, it's much more important than that!" |
