At least one tRump appointment
Isn’t outright horrible or stupid. Joel Salatin was just appointed “Advisor to the Secretary” to the USDA. He has some very innovative and interesting ideas about something I’ve been working towards…. Restorative agriculture. I’ve been restoring a wetland and also organic gardening for the last 11 years. Our good friend who lives on our property is deeply involved in soil biology, composting, and restoration work. She told me about this guy. He’s a bit of a whack job, a self-described "Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer.”

His farm,”Polyface Farm is a 550-acre (220-hectare) farm in Swoope, Virginia. The farmhouse was built in 1750 and added on throughout the years. It was purchased by the Salatins in 1961. Tiring of writing for the newspaper, Salatin decided to try farming full-time. Each year, he revised his organic farming techniques, which have low overhead and equipment costs, and the farm began to turn a profit. The farm grosses $350,000 and is deemed a commercial farm by the United States Department of Agriculture.[1]
Salatin's philosophy of farming emphasizes healthy grass on which animals can thrive in a symbiotic cycle of feeding. Cows are moved from one pasture to another rather than being centrally corn fed. Chickens in portable coops are moved in behind them, where they dig through the cow dung to eat protein-rich fly larvae while further fertilizing the field with their droppings.[9]
Salatin condemns the negative impact of the United States government on his livelihood because of what he considers an increasingly regulatory approach taken toward farming.[10] He is a self-described "Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer", producing meat he describes as "beyond organic", using environmentally responsible, ecologically beneficial, sustainable agriculture. Jo Robinson said of Salatin, "He's not going back to the old model. There's nothing in county extension or old-fashioned ag science that really informs him. He is just looking totally afresh at how to maximize production in an integrated system on a holistic farm. He's just totally innovative."”

Oops
Not so fast

Joel Salatin, the self-proclaimed “Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer,” has used a recent podcast episode to categorically deny rumors that he might be taking a role within the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In true Salatin fashion, his tone oscillated between bemused and exasperated as he dismantled the notion that he’d ever trade in his pitchfork in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley for a desk job in D.C.

Yet while he was quick to point fingers at social media run amok, the confusion seems to stem from a November 6 blog post where Salatin himself teased: “I’ve been contacted by the Trump transition team to hold some sort of position within the USDA and have accepted one of the six ‘Advisor to the Secretary’ spots. My favorite congressman, Thomas Massie from Kentucky, has agreed to go in as Secretary of Agriculture.”

Predictably, this statement triggered a wildfire of speculation. Homestead Living and Reddit forums, for example, lit up with claims that Salatin had secured a USDA appointment courtesy of Massie, a Republican U.S. congressman. Some outlets even took his words at face value, cementing the idea that Salatin was bound for the bureaucratic trenches.

However, speaking on the Beyond Labels Podcast (which Salatin runs with nutritional scientist Sina McCullough), Salatin firmly put the brakes on these rumors. He painted a colorful picture of how the “gossip chain” had morphed his name being floated for consideration into an outright federal appointment.

“I have not been contacted, I have not accepted anything, and frankly, I don’t want to move to Washington,” he stated plainly, adding, “I’m not a bureaucrat.”

As usual: The media ran with it before searching for facts.
