One of the best drawing weapons on the board...Sometimes,if you are playing a monster who is rated much HIGHER than you and you suspect that he will crush you, what the hell can you do to prevent this? Would a draw be good enough for you? According to most statistical databases, which opening for BLACK would be the best of the best defense against a monster, say someone rated several hundred rating points above you? Answer: The Petrov Defense!!! Mainline with blacks 5...d5 which supports the Knight on e4 and equalizes the board. 1.e4,e5 2.Nf3,Nf6 3.Nxe5,d6 4.Nf3,Nxe4 5.d4,d5 I will give you more game details as time goes on. In general, the Petrov is very hard to beat or gain an advantage against white or black. But it is black that will be the "instigator"of this defense! The symmetrical moves form a wall of equality right from the opening.White,in particular can also force a draw by trading down to a "dull" symmetrical endgame. So,having a draw weapon at your disposal is just as important as winning, especially against....monsters.You can gain some decent points for a draw, rather than lose points against some 2200+ opponent!Playing for draws is common, but not always admitted to,even on the GM levels!!! |
