Drums were my life for decades as well as musicFrom 1968 and into the 1970's...played in several Disco bands, then later Rock bands during the hippy culture.Played with a heavy metal band for about one year.Between the late 1970's and into the 1980's had purchased other drum sets, including the electronic pad by Tama. The drummer in this video was not trained like me to use it to its peak performance, but to give you an idea: www.drumeo.com When I played with any Rock bands,I found out through trial and error that the clear or colored Acrylic drums had the best sound projection and volume to equalize with any of our lead guitar or rhythm guitar solo riffs. The sound also projected much further in to the audience....much more than the standard wood base drums. Here is a very similar picture of what I owned, except mine was clear, not tinted: reverb.com Two other sets I had were a Tama(full stainless steel)for general club use during the 1980's/1990's and a Slingerland all wood set with white pearl finish for Jazz. The Jazz was infrequent, but we managed a contract several times in NYC and at the Atlantic City Casino's,and a few times in the Pocono Mt's of Pa. So,overall as a professional drummer and drum instructor my experience is vast. I knew in Kindergarten that I was going to be a drummer one day!I could feel my sense of rhythm, after all the kids took an instrument out of the school closet like a plastic trumpet, Clarinet and other instruments.I took a tambourine and began tapping my fingers on it to the perfect rhythm of some music that the teacher played on her piano. I was on the TED Mack Amateur hour and did a 5 min drum solo.Drum solos were my speciality! I played in the Mummers Parades in Philadelphia,Miss America Pageant in Atlantic City,Halloween parades,HS football game half times and multi contest cavalcades with the HS bands.About 300 wedding receptions with several bands over the decades! I cannot even begin to count the number of nightclubs I played in with about 10 bands between 1968 and into the 2000's.My Pop band played as far south as Fort Lauderdale Florida where some of the best nightclubs existed in the country, especially in the 1980's. ------------------------------ In the 1980's,I started working for Virgin records Schallplatten Division in Germany. Much later it became:EMI.I helped place many of Sandra Lauer's tunes to her 12" and 7"vinyls.It always was a high honor to place Germany's top female Pop superstar onto those famous records! She was also one of the very top Pop singers in all of Europe,Japan and beyond. Now you know WHY I highlight her in my profile and club forum!!!!Indeed, she was brilliant and legendary during the 1980's and 1990's!!Top of the fame list for Euro Pop Superstars!!!Yes..."The Madonna Of Europe"as the USA fans nicknamed her!!! In between all of this drumming/record stuff,A good friend of mine and myself decided to open a sound studio near NYC.That was in the early 1980's.A period of time that Pop music began to shine, more than any other decade in history. We recorded a number of established and up and coming Pop bands, with an occasional Rock band.By 1985,we recorded two Superstars of Pop music.Business was good.By 1988,we contracted with a larger sound studio in Europe, close to the Belgium border. Many Euro Pop artists entered our studio, some names you may be familiar with that I mention in my profile!I began to live in Europe, first in Belgium, then later in Germany. But traveled back and forth between Europe and the USA. Guess who I met in Germany?Sandra Lauer!!! As time and the years progressed,I planned my retirement.Instead of full retirement,I decided to maintain full ownership of both studio's,but contracted both out to other professional recording artists. Now partially retired,I remain as a consultant to other sound studio techs that work at both locations.I had "bought out"my original partner and friend with a very good financial settlement for him. Now,mainly retired,I live on St Barts in the Caribbean.I have two homes in the USA,but only visit them during major USA holidays.I am planning to sell one or both of those homes in the USA and use the funds to build a large home in Ibiza in the Med,with construction already started. It will be overlooking the ocean, near a cliff. Well...that my life with drums, nightclubs, recording studio's and music stars. Many famous names I prefer not to mention for personal and security reasons. Its part of the trade! So,after all the Rock,Jazz,Polkas,Blues,Country and Country Rock music...which style of music do I prefer the most????: Pop music!!!! In the 1980's Pop ruled, even MORE than Rock music!!!The nightclubs were always filled to capacity on Friday and Saturday nights, between 9pm and 2am!See..Pop music was always a much more danceable style of music, even more than Rock music! Its beats, rhythms, soloists and new styles of Pop that emerged...including "Synth-Pop"became the "ruling force"across those raised dance floors under the laser lights!!!!!!The 1980's became what was called"The Dawn of the legendary Supergiants in Pop".Names like Madonna,Michael Jackson,Whitney Houston,Cyndi Lauper,Sabrina,Nena,France Gall,Alphaville,Sandra Lauer and many more!!THEY were the ones that made those 1980's and early 1990's explode into ultra fame!! So Pop it is for me...my life. Hope you enjoyed this little autobiography of my music career!!!! Best, Joe |
