What IF the Beatles had never came to the USA in 1964 What if ABBA never toured the USA 14 times(if I remember correctly),then returned back to Sweden? Lets start with those famous Beatles! If you are from the USA...can you honesty feel that the Beatles fame would have mounted to anything nearly as significant as they became if and I say "if"they never came to America starting in 1964??Think hard! The "real"answer is:No!Even the famous Beatles...would have been swept under the carpet by many or most USA fans,if they chose to stay in Europe!Think hard,before you disagree with this statement!The music pro's and record producers like me understand things more deeply than you can fathom! Even with ABBA....many Americans would have passed ABBA by and would have either not acknowledged them or swiftly forgotten about them. See...perceptions of fame and brilliance most of the time,especially in Pop and Rock music are ONLY based upon "tours"or relocating to the USA.But it really SHOULD NOT BE!The same with USA singers not touring Europe.But it is mainly not coming to the USA.Many in the USA have had this attitude..."well,if you are not coming here to my great country,then you are not worthy of me even listening to you",your a nobody".See...that is the wrong perception!There are many Euro singers,that have not had all the opportunities or even the large amount of cash or even desire to reach the USA shorelines...yet their music can or was found in vinyl record sales,TV(like MTV),the USA radio and more.Many USA fans simply ignore many of the great Pop and Rock artists from Europe.I can remember many times entering a record store and watching and listening to customers as they fan through records.When they reach the Euro section,no matter who it was...they moved on. Expanding for a local musician to international reach requires alot of money, which usually has to be earned with domestic success first. USA has the biggest local market for success of a english-language song, providing comparably the biggest amount of budget to expand to other markets. Please note: In conclusion, a successful singer in the US has the biggest potential to reach global success, regardless of his actual talent as a singer.But the reverse is not always the same! That said, there is alot of English-language music which is actually not from US, but this is often a carefully crafted secret, because the acceptance for local English music in Non-English countries is much higher if the listener believes the music is coming from US or UK. The real question,for example is...which country,the USA or the UK has produced the "better"Rock music?The better rock music has come from the UK. Sure, the U.S. may have kicked things off with Bill Haley, Elvis, and Eddie Cochran, but the UK has been the bigger influencer of trends since the early 60s. More of the biggest and long-lasting bands have come from the UK, all the way back to the Beatles and the Stones. Synth rock and New Wave? Ultravox was just behind Germany’s Kraftwerk in establishing the genre, followed by Depeche Mode, New Order, etc. And let’s not forget Elvis Costello or Joe Jackson, and that U2 began as a new wave act. Many in the USA intentionally ignore the best bands and singers if they have not toured in the USA....no matter how many of their tunes reach the USA radio or TV. ----------------------------- Now...back to 1980's Pop/Synth-Pop music!My specialty! Why do you think Madonna's fame was that intensive in the USA?Sure,it spread internationally but really why?Do you think that the Euro Pop fans were simply buying up her records?Not really!Madonna was,in reality,a business mogul.She was backed up by intensive US investments,a movie,TV commercials,"planned"controversial acts like sex and Cross burning,political involvements and more.So,in true reality,it was not as much her real talent and voice as you may believe!The real music pro,unlike the fans knew the REAL truth.So,while the money flowed into the record shops and the USA fans were entranced by Madonna,the music pro's were shaking their heads....No. Now,of course,I have to bring you briefly into the world of another female singer called Sandra Lauer.But she was from Europe,not the USA!Now,what was that I mentioned above about USA tours,USA $$ investments and more?See,Sandra was not big time in the USA,but she was in Europe!!Again,even though Sandra appeared on MTV right alongside of Madonna,Michael Jackson and Prince and her records were in the USA stores,the USA fans still did not acknowledge her as they really should have!She had no real big need or desire to tour the USA back in the 1980's.Her fame and wealth,while smaller than Madonna (in the USA)due to Madonna's marketing strategies...Sandra fell short of Madonna in the USA.But in Europe,where Sandra was recording her tunes and touring through country after country in Europe gained her the high praise and respect across most of continental Europe. The USA fans began to acknowledge Sandra's brilliance once they began to realize her massive fame that had expanded though Europe,including her Euro and Asian record sales.Many Pop fans in the USA,after listening to her "once again"on MTV,began to "hear"the much better vocal qualities that Sandra possessed over Madonna!!A rare few began to realize that Madonna was simply a marketing tool,more than a monumental world-class singer!!!The music pro's agreed! Thus...the USA fans of Sandra gave her a nickname that today,is still written in stone: "The Madonna of Europe" So,Sandra did not tour the USA and her fame in the USA never reached as high as Madonna. But in Europe,Sandra Lauers fame became larger than Madonna in many ways,shapes and forms.While many internet reports differ,the truth is that Sandra's record sales in most of Europe began to SURPASS the great Madonna from the USA...regardless of Madonna's wealth and marketing strategies!!!See Wiki below,second paragraph and the additional link below and read it closely!Its a shame that marketing and tours can change the "perceptions of brilliance"! If a fan of Pop back in the 1980's would have reached into that Euro bin of records with Sandra instead of the hot USA bin of Madonna records and kept an "open mind and ear"then very possibly they would have bypassed the marketing tricks of Madonna and fell in love with Sandra.The Euro fans were already beloved with Sandra Lauer and Sandra knew it.So,she remained loyal to her fans in Europe,never deciding to tour the USA until much later in her career....and then only rarely!
