Summary of pregame detective work....
1.Know your opponent, even if you never played him before!

2.Check his profile.Too many wins?Too perfect a record?New player on GK?Be suspicious all the time.

3.Check his average opponents rating.Too high for you vs his win ratio?Check his highest win against whom and who he lost against with respect to the lowest rated player.Draw a yes or no with those numbers in mind as to the acceptance of a game with this opponent.

4.Check his/her time-out record. This may be an indicator that his rating is actually higher than his recent string of losses!Again,be cautious! You may lose against this guy and not see why.

5.Check his average move time.He may be playing way to slow or perhaps too fast to fit into your style of play.

6.As related to #5 above....caution playing anyone with very short average move times(like an hour or less) who has a beautifully fantastic win record with little or no losses! This is with special mention to anyone who is new on GK and is still provisional...or have played less than,say,75 games.Advice:Stay clear of these players!

7.Seek out past losses of your opponent and concentrate on playing game openings and variations where he lost one or more times against others.Find out WHERE in the game this potential opponent went astray and analyze by yourself or with a strong program ahead of time before the game theoretically begins. But of course,do not use a program to play any games at any point in any live GK corresp games.Opening books yes....programs....no.

8.Seek out books that EXCEED the ELO strength and length of GK's book! This is easy, for so many are BETTER than GK's!!!Ask me(TA)or simply purchase a subscription to Hiarcs Opening book,Houdini,Rybka or others. Many older books can be downloaded for free, even though they are older books. Some "older"books (like Hiarcs) are STILL longer and stronger than GK's!So what is your excuse for not getting these books, especially the free ones?Lazy?Get with the program! If you want to improve then these recipe's are necessary.Maybe not as a player south of 1400 in rating, but eventually. And at least looking at an opening book at any rating is not going to harm you!If you hear differently, that is pure Hogwash with a capital H!

9.Steer clear of openings that your opponent seems to be concentrating on the most, especially with an abundance of wins. Its smarter to change his "pathways of thinking"and try d4 instead of e4 or maybe 1.c4.As black, maybe instead of a standard Sicilian Defense, maybe a Caro or as white an Anticilian.....1.e4,c5 2.c3.Changing the system from the norm has psychological advantages quite often and could conceivably leave your opponent unprepared...even with books! Why?Well, with all the book lines, its not always easy to pick and choose which top 5 variations will work best for you or against your opponent.Do your past game research.Perhaps he has not played any Caro's or Antisicilians? This surprise weapon could possibly give you an edge.

10.Want your opponent to time-out regardless of rating manipulation? No way to control that...but theoretically playing a more open game by midgame which may involve more complex positional strategy along with the time of year(yes!)may accelerate the potentiality of his time-out!Now how on Earth did I come to this conclusion?
Answer:Any more complex thinking whether it be a closed or open game(depending upon what you have discovered in this opponents past game record to where he shines or becomes a dull blade)combined with games that are APPROX timed correctly....to be in midgame or the start of the endgame in and around the holidays(Christmas,Thanksgiving,New Years)have a HIGHER statistical level of time-outs!!!!!!!!Trust me...this is true!!!!Only I would know these things or perhaps a few senior masters on GK.Its a secret that I usually do not reveal, but i'll do it just this one time!Complex response moves take more think time.Holidays require more family time, kids, people over, drinks, drunkenness, extra hangover sleep, car troubles, not getting back in time to make your GK move(car, train or airplane) and do not forget that extra food which can make you sleepy, less alert...maybe the tryptophan in the turkey?Tons of reasons that players time-out more during the holidays!!!!!So start your game a month or so before any holidays!
Hogwash?Think again my friends!

11.For the same reasons above, you may want to place your games on hold and do a vacation for a week or two away from your games during the holidays, even if you seem to have more time during the holiday season to play.If not,be careful how much food, drink you consume and at what time of the day or night you are playing. Before bed is usually not good. After you wake is better after you have a light breakfast and that cup of coffee! Also, not immediately when you get home from work!Chances are,you may still be "wired up"with a bit of high blood pressure from that lousy day at work or arguing with a coworker!Relax, wait and move later on.

Continued from above....
12. Take a closer look at a potential opponent moves in real time(game in progress)that is just started. In senior master thinking, the way an opponent moves in BOOK determines(sometimes) that this particular player may not be taking enough care, caution and deeper research into the books "tree branching variations".For example,he may be only playing from the top of the book list in the program without regards to number of games researched in the book determinations or the better average players rating in that book line tree.In other words,he may be very hasty in his book move selections, without regard to many transpositions or weaker middle game directions that a game can move into after the other player HAS done his slower move, deeper research in that book.Haste makes waste as they say!Too fast a book mover many times does indeed=a weaker book player....and a weaker in book player is usually at a disadvantage later in the game, not necessarily at that exact point. So,keep an eye on a live game that is at,say, move 25 or less.Is one of the players making 2,3,4 or more book moves in just 5 minutes or less?Remember that!May not seem like much now,but maybe in a few weeks when you decide to play this "fast book mover",you move very slowly(the opposite!),take your time and slowly run different book lines from the top of the stat list. There is usually 3 or 4 you can choose from! Not all are the "best"...as you will find out when you begin to have more experience using books and your rating climbs(hopefully!).
