 Differences between Rock/Pop and more info...en.wikipedia.org As to Rock...this list is also not totally accurate and complete,but it gives you an idea of the different styles/subgenres out there for decades: www.musicianwave.com Today,many of the styles of Pop and Rock have combined and intertwined with one another,sometimes making it difficult to define the differences between one another. The general "rule of thumb"separating the main two styles of music has changed over the decades.But certain aspects of the two most popular styles of music has not changed much between the 1950's and the present. As a music pro in the recording business,let me define just a few differences,then isolate them a bit more in the differences during the 1970's/1980's.I have chosen those two decades,because most "connoisseurs"of the Pop and Rock classics attest that Rock was at the height of its fame in the 1970's and Pop music was at the true pinnacle of its own fame during the 1980's.There will always be counter arguments to this,but as a record producer,I can tell you that there are general pattern differences. Here for example is two random links that define some of the differences: www.differencebetween.net www.123helpme.com But Rock,overall,with the exception of the late 1960's and through the 1970's has not been at the very top of the popularity list and gathers a smaller circle of listeners than Pop music has,especially when Pop "ruled"during the 1980's and into the 1990's. Rocks music themes many times differ from Pop...from Rocks love,sex,drugs,war,politics,revolts compared to Pop softer love stories,adventures and more memorable tunes with the words to remember.In addition,and this is KEY.... With the specific rhythms and beats that Pop has over Rock music...it has almost always been MUCH BETTER designed for dancing compared to Rock music.Sure,there are always exceptions!But "overall"Pop music has been MUCH MORE widely accepted as the "main driving force"for both the professional and amateur dancers on stage or in the nightclubs across the word! Rock music tends to concentrate and emphasize more on instrumentation and a bit less on overall vocals.Whereas,Pop music tends to be the opposite...more on vocals and a bit less on instrumentation.During the 1980's,for example,many Pop soloists had arisen and their vocals took center stage,while their instruments were many times hidden away more from the stage,or even in a Pop music video. In not all,but most Rock styles...the lead guitar was almost always present and was a "must"have with heavier Rock music and Heavy Metal styles.So...those "screaming" lead guitars were a must to make those Rock statements or shatter some glass!!!! But Pop was different...well,most of the time! During the 1980's for example,there were not too many "lead guitars"ripping and roaring around like a lion.There were indeed Rhythm guitars,hollow guitars and Bass guitars,but not nearly as many Lead guitars as Rock had!So,you might be thinking that is because Pop is simply a "softer version"of Rock?Right?WRONG!!!! Pop is,for the most part vastly different in chemistry,style,words,themes,beats, rhythms and more!No,Pop is not Rock!Although in 2023,with intermixed styles, that has changed to "some small extent". During the 1980's for example,the lead guitars of Rock were being "replaced" by the newly enhanced electronic Keyboards of Pop music!Those ripping and screaming lead guitars were.....OUT!!Rhythm guitars remained and Bass was still around and so were the drums.Much of this was very apparent in the nightclubs across both Europe and the USA!Between 1984-1995,there were MANY MORE POP CLUBS across both America and Europe than Rock clubs!!! The dance crowds wanted more POP...not Rock & Roll music as much!! Strict Rock fans would deny this,but as a music pro...I know the facts! So,while Rock music has always remained a favorite of a large level of worldwide fans,there actually has,for the most part,been an even LARGER CIRCLE of dedicated Pop fans in massive numbers,especially in the 1980's and 1990's. So bands like AC/DC,The Rolling Stones,Led Zeppelin,Boston,Guns N'Roses, Metallica and many more Rock bands had their dedicated worshipers,but.... the "larger circle" had "their"hero's like....Madonna,Michael Jackson,Whitney Houston,Prince,Cyndi Lauper,Queen,The Culture Club,The Police,Sandra Lauer, Sabrina,Nena,France Gall,Alphaville and many others! And not to pick on those loud screaming lead guitars again...but most of those Pop artists needed NO lead guitar in their music!A great sounding Keyboard,Bass and drums many times is all it took to FILL those dance floors between 9pm and 2am on a Friday and Saturday night during the 1980's and 1990's! Ahhhh..but during the 1970's,it is true the Rock music prevailed over Pop! But that was temporary!When Pop music "evolved"into many of its styles and its many subgenres,along with the new Pop artists that has arisen in the 1980's...all of that changed!!!And Rock did indeed...take "second chair"! As to Country music during the 1980's and 1990's?At one time,it overtook BOTH Pop and Rock music in popularity!!But that is another story and something I rarely touch on...because Country music has never been my cup of tea! But I do acknowledge its greatness! |

Oh...above Yes,to many extents that is true!But it all depends! The Police started as a punk rock band, but soon expanded their music vocabulary to incorporate reggae,Pop and new wave sonorities to their sound.In addition,many DJ's twisted the Police and Queen by remix into a more danceable style of music in the Pop nightclubs.In any case,Alt Rock sometimes runs the "fence line"of Pop,regardless of what the band style was originally labeled as. But I thank the reader who sent me that message!Someone is very sharp in seeing that kind of oversight by me!I should have been more "precise"!But I guess I thought that no one reads my rants anyway!I was wrong. |
