Moving early out of book advantages
Did you ever get the feeling in many d4 and e4 openings or defenses that you are not even playing your "own"real game anymore...just playing against a massive opening database?Well,it is true that many players, especially north of about 1800 in rating use opening databases, whether it be GK's or some other they can find online or in a paper book. Many games can go beyond move #30 with book lines and its not even your "real"game!!

Nothing wrong with that and its totally legal to do so.But,I suggest that at least once in a while you find an opening that is "your game"not the opening book game, customize it and experiment!

How so?

Well,I can give you a thousand examples, but let me pick an easy one right now:

This one is called my Trompowski variation as white:

1.d4,Nf6
2.Bg5,d6
3.h3?

Position:

Now,"in book"moves for the Tromp was numerous, but does NOT include 3.h3
See if you can find it in your opening book!I doubt it!

For whites #3 the normal responses could have been either: Bxf6(common) or Nf3 or Nc3 and a few others, less common. But 3.h3 throws the game out of book!

Now the question!
How bad is 3.h3 ???? And remember, you are NOW OUT OF BOOK!

Answer:Game is "almost"perfectly EQUAL.And later on,it "could"transpose,but not yet.
Game is still young, white has more central pawn control on d4 while whites Bishop can still threaten blacks Knight on f6 by capturing, then doubling blacks pawns on f6!This can be disadvantageous for black later on it the game, especially with his f7 pawn hemmed in.
Blacks Bishop on c8 does have much more spatial advantage, but whites pawn move soon
on e2 can rectify that.

So..EXACTLY what is this equal advantage, other than what I tell you found out???????????

Ahhhh...now THAT is the key!!

Prior to doing something like 3.h3 you have ALREADY done your homework, prior to any game with your opponent! How?

By using a strong computer software program and analyze! It is not critical which one you use!
I used Komodo for this example and an older version. But you must MAKE SURE that Komodo with the GUI your using already has an opening book accompanying it!In this case,I used a polyglot book, but Hiarcs or others will give you the same results....most of the time.

So....

1.You plug in the moves into the gameboard.
2.Look at the moment the book stops and the computer begin to analyze that position
from move #3.h3
3.What do you see in the analysis window?
4.In the case of 3.h3...the computer program indicates, after even 10 minutes of analysis
a: -0.05 to a 0.00!! This means that both sides have almost perfect equality in pawn unit
evaluation!

So,what is the advantage?Well many!

You now have a game that is YOUR own!Not playing against some strong book that might crush you into sawdust! In addition, you can use that program analysis long before any game you play on GK to be prepared! You might want to,for example, play against the program to move 30 and see how it goes!Yes,you might have to lower the strength of the program, but that is easy to do!

So,moving OUT of book does have advantages! Not always on the elite rating levels north of 2300 like myself, but then 3.h3(as above) can boil down to have more "drawish characteristics"
about it,especially if I want to draw against a nasty 2600 rated player! For undoubtedly, that 2500 to 2600 player WILL be using a strong opening book!!So...I can throw a "monkey wrench"into HIS plans!!!

Get the idea???

Now...that was only one example out of hundreds! All you have to do is experiment!
When you follow an opening book line, just alter the move several times and find just one of those variational moves that the program states "0.00" or close to that!Then...that becomes
your "secret weapon"against some nasty opening book that would have went to move 40!!
Smash your opponents opening book to shattered glass! Not as hard as you may think!

Now above, you might be asking..what if black moves 3....Ne4 after my 3.h3?
That is no problemo!

See,that is STILL a "standard"Trompowksi response for black!

A simple 4.Be3 still keeps the game EXACTLY =!!

Then, since blacks Knight is in "your"territory, you can easily attack his Knight with your f2 pawn
or counterattack with whites Knight on b1....Nc3 for example. These odd moves by white many times does confuse some black players and makes them scratch their heads!!

Get it yet?

Ahhh...so you WANT to stay in book?No problemo!Just ignore everything I said above!

So,any questions?Want any more examples?Future questions will be answered.

What the hell is a polyglot opening book you may be asking? Not here and not yet!
That takes more explaining! When I think someone is reading my posts,I will give
you more of my wisdom!Just kiss my ring and bow to me on the way out walking
backwards, but never turn your back!Ha ha!I seen that in a movie once with royalty!

Back to the beach now,my margarita is getting warm! The bartender better have put salt on that rim!
