Openings book comparisons...GK vs the "better"books
I have several posts on openings books both paperback or computer books.
You can breeze through the links below. But let me make a few quick comments
to summarize below these links.

gameknot.com
gameknot.com
gameknot.com
gameknot.com
gameknot.com

More specifically,GK opening book which is here:
gameknot.com

Versus an opening book like here:
www.google.com

Or Hiarcs "free version"link:

www.hiarcs.com

What is the bottom line?Even Hiarcs free version has much more to offer that GK's book!
The thing is GK's book is NOT constantly "updated"with the top GM,IM and strong tournament games.Hiarcs is!!!Maybe not the free versions, but once you pay for a year of Hiarcs or other opening books like "ChessBase",then, about every 3 months you get brand new openings databases from real top level games INCLUDING computer vs human and computer vs computer games!GK cannot and will not ever compare in quality to a few of those opening books on the market. Many GMs recommend Hiarcs, but Chessbase has more of a deeper
opening database...but its format is not as user friendly and you have to manually click on the various opening tree branches, while Hiarcs in more "automatic".

I would suggest, for those who want to experiment and not shell, out 40 dollars for a year, then just download the free version from the link above. Its not as up to date or complete, but I guarantee it is STILL superior to GK's book! The depth of quick reference, better graphics, comparison stats like win and draw lines per that particular move at the moment are much more complex and interesting than GK's!The latest CTG opening 15i book from Hiarcs has:35,768,257 positions and 2,120,477 variations. Now you can find some opening books that have more...but those games are NOT based upon ALL the TOP LEVEL games around the globe.GK's book, for example may have all kinds of games from all levels, including the past games played on GK.So,do not let GK's game book level fool you...its simply inferior.
You want the best....your going to have to pay for it!But you must have the proper GUI to download Hiarcs,Chessbase,Fauzi 3.3 and other opening books.GUI's like Fritz,Shredder,Arena and others will suffice. For simplicity,I suggest an old Shredder 11 or 12 program.

I could give you a thousand examples, but let me just randomly show you just one example where GK's so called "world database"runs out of book rather quickly!Perhaps there may be a later transposition, but that does not matter because one would not know that immediately, well maybe me but not you!?

Now before I show you,you may be thinking,well....no one would makes early moves like that,so why show me?Think again!First of all the moves WERE made and at high levels of play.
The other thing is that one database HAS the moves and GK does not! Some players want to FOOL an opening database(like GK's),but that is NOT as easy with Hiarcs!Proof?Sure!

1.d4,Nf6
2.Bg5,e6
3.a3,h6
4.Bxf6,Qxf6

Now...not the way I would play, but that is besides the point!

Now...lets take a brief look at GK's world book and NO,the GK game site opening book is no better! This is how "far"GK's book goes:

1.d4,Nf6
2.Bg5,e6

When you try to plug in 3.a3 or anything else NOT in GK's their move list...you get zilch!

NOW,let me EXPAND a subvariation with the same game and show you how far it goes with a Hiarcs book.In this case,it is not very far because of the irregular move openings above, but it DOES go to move #8!And THAT IS the point!

1.d4,Nf6
2.Bg5,e6
3.a3,h6
4.Bxf6,Qxf6
5.c4,c5
6.e3,Nc6
7.Ne2,cxd4
8.Nxd4 and now out of book with black to move.

In the following diagram, which includes 8.Nxd4
Hiarcs gives black a half pawn advantage(not much)at: -0.60

So,this was just one simple example.
If I were to have plugged in better and stronger opening moves, then Hiarcs could have taken it as high as 50 moves or more!GK's would have FAILED,probably after move 30 or so.Depends.
But the high quality GM/IM and Computer vs computer games by Hiarcs that are updated every 3 months(4 times a year)make it an invaluable tool for learning!

Just making any move and seeing how it corelates step by step with the stats, branch tree analysis win/draw/loss probabilities and more is a quick and valuable tool for any player of a higher rating level. What higher level?Well,I suggest not even looking too much at these opening books until you reach, say 1800 or higher. In the meantime, doing some reading on various openings, getting general ideas, maybe peeking at MCO-15 or a few online chess video's should wet your appetite to improve..in the proper way!

No,no,no.None of this is cheating!Opening books, just like GK's are there for your study and CAN be used during any game on GK!But cheating would begin IF you start to go BEYOND any book, whether it be Hiarcs,Fauzi or GK's and then start to let your computer program start analyzing the out of book position from that point or beyond. But the key is that some opening books run much DEEPER than others! Is that unfair to others who only use the GK book?
Not really!Should I feel guilty because I have 2,000 books about chess and 10 opening books linked to Arena and you do not have any of those????????????

So,no...get your facts straight! You set YOUR OWN limits!Others have higher aspirations and investments in the game and do deeper analysis. If you want to just use no opening book or inferior ones like GK's....that is your choice...not mine or others!

Questions?Perhaps questions about GUI's or CTG?
How to use computer opening books in more detail?
I am here, just ask!I may be having drink on the beach in St Barts or Ibiza watching the yachts
coming close to shore. But I will get back to you,one way or another!
