Woodstock 1969.The best. But then, that is relative! Many of the connoisseur's and Rock purists of the 1960's and 1970's are not as "able"to comprehend the depth and brilliancies of Pop music from the 1980's.The music styles change about every decade and make room for different style of music, including "Synth-Pop that started to peak around 1984 and beyond.I worked for Virgin Records back in the 1980's and had many associates that I kept in close contact with at Capital Records in LA. In reality and with the music 80's styles, emerging new singers, dance styles, clothing trend style changes and the need for music to "change"into its best dance forms....Pop began to rule and "take over"much of the music scene.By 1984,Pop began to outpace Rock music in popularity, especially with the emergence of singers like Madonna,Michael Jackson,Cyndi Lauper, Whitney Houston,Prince and many Euro singers like Sabrina,Nena,Alphaville,France Gall,Sandra Lauer and many more artists.I did not include Tina Turner because she was mainly a Rock, not a Pop artist. The recording pro's like myself all agree that Pop began to rule most of the larger record sales and artists fame through the 1980's and into the early 1990's.The dance floors were filled to capacity back in the 1980's to the tunes of the artists above(and more). In toll, the great and legendary Rock artists, even Hendricks, were not as recognized as the singer/performers like Jackson and others that had arisen in the 1980's.Again,about every decade or so,the music styles and music trends change.By 1993,Pop began to wane a bit as Progressive Rock took root in the USA and Europe.Again, the 10 year cycle had begun. I try not to "compare"the greats like Hendricks or Joplin from the 1960's and 1970's and cross reference them to any of the legendary Pop singers of the 1980's.Why?The differences in style, Rock vs Pop,danceability differences, performance differences and even voice differences are not as easily compared or understood under different frames of reference.I know as a recording artists every fine point of what makes a singer a true legend or have a brilliancy above others. It could be 30 different factors from the 16 key points, perfect pitch, vocal control, phrasing, self awareness, clarity, breathing, eye contact, vocal range, higher octave supremacy, resonance and tone control, body movements, dance routines and about 50 more attributes. Many of these same factors were not as "evolved"in the 1960's as they later became in the 1980's with the new recording electronics, better mikes and different approaches to music. 1980's/1990's Pop's styles were much more numerous than the Rock music of the 1960's and 1970's.Much more "opportunities"in fame and voice came about,by 1984 and later. So again, what many Rock enthusiasts deem as a really "good voice"from the 1960's/1970's is not necessarily in agreement to the 1980's recording artists and specialists that can dissect a singers voice and add up all of their complex attributes defining a "brilliance beyond". Much of that is due to the music style changes of the 1980's,whereas,someone may have been a 1960's or 1970's legend at the time and their music reached their soul deeply, but in reality...did they REALLY HAVE a world-class voice? Many times....NO.Any tune can sound great, but does the artist actually have what it "takes"to become a world-class and global Superstar with a top notch voice?Yes and no.I can give you many examples.Madonna was the very top rated female Pop Superstar in the USA back in the 1980's.But much of her stardom was based upon a business like approach, contoversial music video's Pepsi commercials,a movie, sexual acts and burning religious Cross's in a music video of hers. The key question is:Did Madonna actually have a world-class voice?According to the music pro's.....NO! So,it takes much more than fame and even record sales to define what the music pro's determine as a "voice above and beyond".That is next to impossible for many Rock fans of the 1960's/1970's to even try and compare any Pop artists of the 1980's.It simply was a different world in the 1980's and a different music style. Some Rock fans feel that 1980's Pop was too unlike the 1960's to be deemed "quality".Other Rock fans will call 80's Pop more cardboard or artificial. So,depending upon what a fan limits in their listening habits, say, only or mainly Rock artists of the 1960's or who appeared at Woodstock, they are usually not as able to actually understand fully what defines a top world-class voice and instead tune in more to the instrumentation. Rock did indeed, concentrate more on instrumentation and less on vocals, whereas Pop artists(especially of the 1980's)concentrated more on vocals and less on instrumentation. In addition, due to the infancy of the internet back in the 1980's,no music steaming, vinyl records being the norm,CD's not popular until 1993,YouTube not arriving until much later in 2005 and MTV and Top Pop TV being the main sources of viewing the Rock and Pop artists in both Europe and the USA...not everyone was "able"to explore and discover the music artists on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. What I am driving at,is that many of the USA fans of both Pop and Rock were unfamiliar with the TOP Euro music artists of the 1980's.Most USA fans simply "stuck"to only USA music artists of their own country and vise versa with the Europeans. Sandra Lauer was indeed one of the VERY TOP female Pop artist sensations of the 1980's/1990's.Her voice was indeed, rated #1 throughout Europe and beyond. And she had made her very first vinyl record at age 14.The sound studio recording artists like myself, who also worked for Virgin Records back in the day, defined Sandra as their #1 pick. That is quite an honor, due to the fact that there were dozens of other really great singers and bands! So,my goal throughout my club and in my profile is to present her to any classic Pop fan that was not aware of her world fame and popularity in OVER 40 countries! You do not become rated #1 in the majority of the world if you do not have a world-class voice,an aura of electricity and a unique music style unlike all the other Pop artists!Sandra, throughout Europe and beyond, represented the pure fabric, essence, chemistry and culture to more Pop fans in this world than you can fathom! Sure,I can pick 30 others from Rock legends to Pop legends! But keep in mind that during the 1980's(and a far cry from the 1960's/1970's)...Pop music actually "ruled"most of the planet back then...(1985-1992).So,to pick a "Queen of Pop"with the voice of an angel during that era in time is presenting to you a goddess beyond compare. Now her Euro music style will not always be "understood"by those Rock fans of the 1960's or even Pop fans of the 1970's....especially those from the USA!Even Sandra's voice will not be understood to its full complexity level,if one is into only Rock or Blues, ect ect. I can only tell you the facts as related to by thousands of music pro's and millions of Sandra's worldwide fans since 1985....that she was the best of the best for Pop music in the "majority"of the world back in the day.Hit after music hit, time and time again.Dozens of albums since age 17 and hundreds of singles and compilations.Thousands of music video's on YouTube and Bing that were transferred years after her performances and studio recording around the globe. She was singing in West Germany when the Berlin Wall was still standing! Again, things are relative. What is legendary or brilliant to one fan is not the same to another fan. Rock fans cannot always define the brilliance and voice of a Pop Superstar and vise versa. Although that is far different than a music pro like myself who has recorded BOTH Rock and Pop stars/Superstars in a sound studio or in a live performance."We know"what goes on behind the scenes, what issues the singer has had,"how many retakes",vocal adjustments(or not) and even their personal lives that can affect their performance and vocal abilities."We know"who REALLY HAS(or had) the very TOP vocal qualities compared to other Pop and Rock stars. So...when I keep highlighting a singer like Sandra, you best believe that she was practically a female "God"in the Pop world of the 1980's!! But...can you define her brilliance?Well, that is another story!! This short story is brought to you by "Joe". Recording artist for the 1980's Pop,Rock and music star "wannabee's" Virgin Records, later called EMI.Recording studio's in both Europe and the USA |

I tend to write too much,so skip the writing! And just scroll on down to over 70 of her tunes that I have posted! If anything,it will be possibly be a new,but belated journey for classic Pop fans that are unfamiliar with Euro Pop as well as Euro Disco!!I have a few Disco tunes of Sandra as well, when she began her stardom at age 17!!In Japan and Russia in 1978 she WAS a Goddess!!But,by 1985,Sandra emerged as a world class Super Queen! And to be brutally honest...she "eclipsed"many of the very top Rock and Pop artists in fame and popularity in the USA!Even then....the USA fans were NOT fully aware of her...why?Because Sandra was so busy recording in her studio in Germany and later in Ibiza, combined with her world tours, that she never visited the USA during those 1980's! She did not have to!Her fame and record sales(surpassing Madonna...see her Wiki second paragraph and the "talkaboutpopmusic" links in my profile)...let her remain with her loyal fans in Europe!Unlike ABBA and other bands back then,Sandra had NO NEED to augment her fame any more!!!So,most USA Pop fans really had no idea of just "how big"Sandra's world fame really was!Time to change that and learn!!!Ahhh...but the music pro's like me always understood! |

But she was a Pop/Disco megastar throughout her life, not a Rock & Roll artist. By the 1980's,music style's changed by popularity and while Woodstock and many of those performing artists remained legendary,Sandra's new "80's"music style, including "Synth-Pop" began to rule the airways, radio,TV and live arenas around the globe. The USA was on the "fence line"between Rock and Pop music, but by 1985,Pop began to take shape in the USA,even MORE than most of those famed names that appeared IN Woodstock. Most strict Rock fans would tend to disagree on that fact of Pop's rise to fame during the 1980's,but as a music pro,I have much data to prove them wrong. So,it much more than just what a person loves...Rock or Pop music. There is a difference,of course! But what is important is how Pop began to rule the ears and eyes of MORE music fans in country after country through most of the 1980's and into the 1990's. Progressive Rock began to blossom in 1993 and the second Woodstock appeared in 1994. A coincidence?I think not! Legends come in many forms...not just Rock music! As to "danceability"especially in the 1980's...long after Woodstock, the nightclubs were filled to capacity with Pop music, not nearly as much Rock and Roll music anymore!Woostock will always be famous in both 1969 and 1994. First with about 400,000 attending in 1969 and in 1994...about 350,000 attending. But the flip side of the coin is that if you add up all the numbers of fans spread out around the globe and not all huddled together in one large area like Woodstock, you can begin to paint a BIGGER picture of just how popular Pop was over Rock. That is why the word"Pop"stands for popular music of which there are many styles of Pop.Synth-Pop just was one of the top styles during the 1980's that was at or near the top of fame....just like Alphaville. No,they also were not part of Woodstock! But Alphaville as well as Sandra Lauer were symbolically the "Pop Woodstock" during the 1980's without fans all huddled together like cattle listening to Hendricks! www.youtube.com 1984 Alphaville.Big in Japan.Euro Pop |

Like I said...brilliancy and greatness comes in many forms. The Kings and Queens of both Rock and Pop come from different worlds!! But no one with a decent brain can or should deny that Pop music shined just as much as the best Rock artists on the planet! Its all about what a music enthusiast perceives. Those who have TRUE "eclectic"tastes in the classics of both Rock AND Pop music have that "perception"above and beyond others who only perceive Rock as their only domain.I love both and attended the 1969 Woodstock with weed, beer and partying for nearly 4 days. But,I also attended hundreds of POP performances in music arenas around the globe... from the USA,throughout Europe,Asia,Japan,Brazil and even Russia! And when you "add up"all those number of fans attending, they would make Woodstock look like a small fenced in yard. Its all about the big picture and perception! |

loud messages to the crowds? Many times, just like Alphaville,Madonna,Sandra Lauer and dozens of other Pop greats and legends...the guitar was not needed!!Well, not the lead guitar anyway.Hmmmm...think about that! What was that I said above about vocals over instrumentation with Pop music?Food for thought. |

Now....of Pop in Moscow!!!!No,its only thousands of fans in one large arena in Moscow compared to Woodstock... as Sandra Lauer sings her music LONG AFTER her hit tunes produced in the 1980's! But,when you "add up"dozens of arenas like THIS,it puts Woodstock in the shadows!Take a look at THIS CROWD!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lets visit Sandra in her OLDER age,but STILL beloved by Europe and beyond!A recurring scenario with Sandra, even in 2023.This music video, however, was in 2013: www.youtube.com 2013.
