Hello - Looking for new artists to listen to.
Im living in Sydney and have been on Gameknot for a few years.
I joined this club to get some more Jazz and Blues recommendations. I have quite a few Jazz CD's but I'm sure I could be missing out on some great artists that I just haven't heard of. At the moment I am likely to be listening to Kenny Burrell, John Coltrane, Nina Simone (Can't get enough of her voice) and a lot of modern electronic r&b/house. While the last is not Jazz as such, its definitely derived from it. I have grown apart from Blues a little as I think I overdosed a few years ago. Im sure I'll get back into it later on.

What flavours do you all listen to?

New Artist to listen to
Just joined the club a few minutes ago.
I grew up listening to John Coltrane. My favorite sax players in the modern era are Najee and Grover Washington. "The Best of Najee" and " The Best of Grover Washington" are worth listening to. Marc Antoine is an excellent guitarist you might want to check out. There are also a lot of remastered (Coltrane Era) cuts available from the old Blue Note Label, Hank Mobley saxophonist, Lee Morgan trunmpet player to name a few.

I have joined..
... this club today, immediately when I saw it. I also love Jazz and Blues music a lot!

streetsy: I can recommend you tonns of great musicians. there is a great musician, who comes from your country, its James Morrison. he plays around 30 instruments! myself I had several years of piano lessons, so I like piano players like John Lewis, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Bennie Green, Amina Claudine Myers, Mary Lou Wiliams, Joe Zawinul, Erroll Garner, Thelonious Monk, Sir Charles Thompson, Kenny Baron, Hank Jones and much others. Good guitar players are f.e. Joe Pass, Mundell Lowe, Emily Remler, Pat Metheny, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessel, Jim Hall, Tal Farlow or Les Paul. Great are recordings come from bass players like Richard Bona, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, Ray Brown, Christian McBride, Red Mitchell, saxophone players to recommend are Ben Webster, David Murray, James Carter, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Gerry Mulligan, Benny Carter, Frank Foster, Frank Wess, Johnny Hodges. there are so many more...

Favorite Artist
To gothicgirl,

One my favorite improvisional piano players is Chick Corea, he wasn't on your list. Joe Zawinul is also one my favoroites. You have a long list of favorites which goes to show how many great jazz musicians there are. An up and coming saxophonist is Eric Darius, check him out.

as for Chick Corea, I have a controversial realationship to him. he is for sure a great musician! but he is also a scientology member, and thats something I dislike profoundly!

Hi,
Yes James Morrison is someone I have seen live a few times but I don't actually have any of his albums. A great thing about him is he likes to experiment with his instruments. He has an electric trumpet which he plays like a synthesizer. Great entertainment value watching and hearing him experiment with it.

Definitely a big list to go through, and a few names I'm not familiar with.

Thanks for that. I'll let you know how I go

yes, James Morrison is great, I saw him once in a concert, playing trumpet, trombone, tenorsax and piano. for one song he played alone, trumpet with the right hand piano with the left hand, performing the Basin Street Blues! amazing.. =)

Allan Zavod
Streetsy:
Allan Zavod is a very interesting jazz accoustic and electric pianist in Melbourne, Australia. He was discovered by Duke Ellington, who got him into the prestigious Berklee School of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Upon graduation he played with Maynard Ferguson and can be heard on Ferguson's Cameleon LP, now also on CD, particularly on Chick Corea's composition, La Fiesta. He can be seen and heard on Ferguson's video DVD, Live at the Top.
His latest CD, the Soundtrack for the movie "Death of a Soldier" features his own compositions on one of which there's a Jim Morrison trumpet solo.

What does shutterbuggy Julia think of pianists Vince Guaraldi, Ray Bryant, Michel Petrucciani, Ahmad Jamal, Ramsey Lewis and Eliani Elias?

Has anybody heard Jason Lindh, a dynamic Scandinavian flautist?

Well, no one liked my post for new jazz artist Diana Krall. Let's try some old school. Have you listened to Son House?
