oh mann
on
so many levels
am not comfortable
with yore request

as to tat
there is a difference between differing based on perception
and differing based on substance

so for instance her perception of Jeff is "nol" -- that is, zero;
while her grasp of the substance of issues affecting the treatment of women is "yuz",
one-hundred percent.

When you look at forced sterilization of peoples
just look at the way Indira Ghandi treated men in eastern India
or the way America treated its "feeble-minded" females in the nineteen-thirties.

Well, thank you. I am not really qualified to evaluate poetry - not my favorite venue. But next time I need some, I will be sure to ask.

but this is, by Bob Kauffman:

Shamsah Translation
I am not commenting on your pompous "commoner" request and HOW DARE YOU CHALLENGE SHAMASH on Uzbekistan! I am mysterious and write like a mystic that is what I DO! Tat is wrong about Jeff but right about how women are treated in muslim countries. I am SHAMASH and I HAVE SPOKEN!

as part of our multicultural assembly, when they opened the assembly with the national anthem, they had a group of 15 kids who each sang a phrase in their language - it was in english, arabic, spanish, french, karen, ukrainian, american sign, russian, lao, mandarin and burmese, and english to finish.

very cool and not at all anti-american!

... again I use the word "intent". If the intent of saying the pledge is honorable, then there cannot be anything inappropriate in using virtually ANY language to say it. If the intent is disrespectful or mocking, then it should not be permitted ... and be completely dismissed.

Children
I obviously don't have a life - I just read through this whole thread. LOL

I believe that schools should be required to teach about different cultures - avoiding religion as much as possible, which is probably the biggest reason it will never happen. Some children are taught to hate by their parents from birth, I feel great sorrow for both.
I personally do not believe in religion - seems to be mostly useful for wars and separating people. A few sentiments I live by,
do unto others as you would have them do unto you,
the best revenge is live a good life,
live and let live.

Go children, teach each other all pledges and anthems in every language.

tjinwa. . .
Regarding that guidepost you live by:

<<"do unto others as you would have them do unto you">>

just wondering, what you may think of the alternate touchstone:

===> Do unto others as They would have you do unto them <===

tjinwa
10-Feb-13, 13:21

Shamash
Basically the same - it is part and parcel, part of "do unto you" means respecting your beliefs, space, etc. so it is incumbent upon "you" and "others" to vice-versa. Hence the further sentiment, live and let live.

I have never thought of the "do unto" sentiment as strictly literal - I might want to be given chocolate, you may want caramel. We will be different but we will both be happy...

the real dangers of chocolate
tjinwa, thank you for clarifying.

and chocolate, after all, may pose perilous risks for men.

<< "The underlying reasons for the increasing occurrence of male reproductive diseases (MRD) such as hypospadias, cryptorchidism, and testicular cancer (TC) over the last decades: Various studies in animals reported that cocoa and theobromine, the main stimulant of cocoa, exert toxic effects on the testis, inducing testicular atrophy and impaired sperm quality.

"A correlation analysis was conducted to examine the role of cocoa consumption on the occurrence of selected MRD during the prenatal and early life period of cases. The incidence rates between 1998–2002 of TC in 18 countries obtained from Cancer Incidence in Five Continents were correlated with the average per-capita consumption of cocoa (kg/capita/year) (FAOSTAT-Database) in these countries from 1965 to 1980, i.e. the period corresponding to the early life of TC cases. In order to test the above correlation in the case of hypospadias, the mean prevalence at birth in 20 countries (1999–2003) with average per-capita consumption of cocoa in these countries in the same period corresponding to pregnancy were used.

"The consumption of cocoa in the period 1965–80, was most closely correlated with the incidence of TC in young adults (r=0.859; p<0.001). An analogous significant correlation was also observed between early cocoa consumption and the prevalence rates of hypospadias in the period 1999–2003 (r=0.760; p<0.001) >>"

henny
does it ever get tiresome being wrong all the time?

As a concept, the Golden Rule has a history that long predates the term "Golden Rule", or "Golden law", as it was called from the 1670s.[1][6] As a concept of "the ethic of reciprocity," it has its roots in a wide range of world cultures, and is a standard way that different cultures use to resolve conflicts.[1][5] It has a long history, and a great number of prominent religious figures and philosophers have restated its reciprocal, "two-way" nature in various ways (not limited to the above forms).[1]

Rushworth Kidder discusses the early contributions of Confucius (551–479 BCE) (See a version in Confucianism below). Kidder notes that this concept's framework appears prominently in many religions, including "Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Zoroastrianism, and the rest of the world's major religions".[7] According to Greg M. Epstein, " 'do unto others' ... is a concept that essentially no religion misses entirely."[8] Simon Blackburn also states that the Golden Rule can be "found in some form in almost every ethical tradition".[9] In his commentary to the Torah verse (Hebrew: "ואהבת לרעך כמוך" ca.1300 BCE):

You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against your kinsfolk. Love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.

—Leviticus 19:18[10], the "Great Commandment"

As Plaut points out, this is the earliest written version of the Golden Rule in the Bible in a positive form.[11] All versions and forms of the proverbial Golden Rule have one aspect in common: they all demand that people treat others in a manner in which they themselves would like to be treated.

Uhm.. henny? Hello there? Henny? Henny!?
Ah, there you are! Please read zorroloco's text again. Or, if that is too difficult, here is a brief summary of what he said:

All religions have that concept (the golden rule: do unto others...).
It appears long before Christianity.
It is also in the Bible.
zorroloco
11-Feb-13, 10:33

yes it is
but the bible stole it from the jews, and the jews from people before them. the golden rule is ancient (older than christianity by far). and it is a part of almost every religion and philosophy. saying it comes from the bible is like saying beer comes from the store... yes it does, but you are missing the key idea that it is not original to the store

Isn't it ironic don't ya think
Can't we all just find a little humor in the fact that tjinwa says religion is only good for wars and separating people and then without missing a beat says his/her sentiment to live by is one of the most repeated religious concepts ever! It is funny and ironic!

You know Ironic, like rain on your wedding day... like a free ride when you already paid... like a thousand spoons when all you need is a knife...

Now as for Hans Christian rmannderson the Danish socialist woman hating muslim loving Chess snob, I'm sure even you can manage a smile every now and then!
