are our candidates. as posted before, each candidate will have one post in which to state his or her case as to why they are the right person for the job. this post must be posted within three days, i.e. by wednesday, sept 13 at 5 pm pacific. this is not much time, but hey, if you are going to be a mod, you need to be on regularly and often in order to be effective. if time is an issue, write your speech ahead of time. in spite of what i anticipate to be some long-winded diatribes, i will not put a word limit on your speeches : )

each current member will get to vote one time. you will have until sunday, sept 17 at 5 pm pacific to vote. you will vote by listing your top 7 choices. all votes will be public. while a secret ballot might be preferable, it leaves someone (me!) in the uneviable position of being the only one who knows for sure that everything is on the up and up. if you are uncomfortable with a public vote, sorry...don't vote. members who join after sept 13th will not get to vote.

people who do not follow these guidelines (ex. posting more than one stump speech, posting too late, etc) will be disqualified. voters who vote more than once or too late will have their votes dq'ed.

there will be no appeals, no supreme court decisions, no rigged diebold election machines, and no one will be forbidden the vote regardless of skin color or economic class!

on your marks, get set, go!

Woo hoo!
I'm not on the list so don't vote for me! Crap...I've sullied the distinguished character of this thread already. I would make a terrible moderator. Plus I could disappear for up to a week! Maybe more if I accidentally died.
leo_london
10-Sep-06, 17:52

Umm...should that be 6 votes, or are we looking for 7 mods plus yourself ?
Plus..can we vote for ourselves ? Personally, I think those standing should have 5 votes.. the five they would choose as fellow mods. Members not standing would have a full 6 votes.
zorroloco

6 votes yes. sorry.
yes everyone vote for 6. include yourself if you want to win. then we can just do a straight count. i am looking forward to your speeches!

My stump speech...
Well, heck, I already had one prepared... a little digging, and here it is (revised for my own amusement, and hopefully getting a chuckle or two from the crowd as well...)

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I believe in pie. If you vote for me, you too must believe in the power of pastry. If you're diabetic or living some kind of freaky gluten-free lifestyle, you can substitute... pm me and we'll resolve our differences quietly so we don't bore everyone else to tears or bury the more important conversations going on here. (Although it almost seems blasphemous to suggest that anything could be more important than pie. Coffee, perhaps, but gay marriage? Assuredly not.)

I promise not to make use of excessive smilies or lol's. I promise to spell check most of my posts, except for when I'm feeling cocky or lazy. I will put in the time necessary to do my job well and to help establish the methods and procedures that help keep a forum running smoothly, but I will not take this too seriously. First and foremost, this is all about playing with language for our mutual amusement, without risking lifelong bans on our accounts or spending two hours a day trying to come to terms with the he-said, she-said.

There's a fine line between heated debate and throwing stones, and I'll do my best to be a fair judge. I'll seek the advice of my fellow moderators before acting unless they're all on vacation and this forum might be shut down if I don't act, because I, too, am human and prone to error. I'll try to make Jeff's life easy and support him in the vision that he has put together for this forum, because it happens to be something that I believe in as well. I'll offer apologies when needed, and I'll bake virtual pies if necessary. I may also throw those virtual pies, but I'll try to make sure I toss a smiley along with them. Pies never hurt anyone, and it's always fun to lick them off. (*checks rulebook for a possible innuendo issue, and decides to let that one pass, too*)

Although I do hold my opinions strongly and defend them vigorously, I will always uphold and respect the right of every other member of this community to do the same. I trust that we are all adults here, and even the ones who are not adults can conduct themselves as such. I believe that there is nothing that cannot be solved without carefully chosen words and a desire to get along with one another and learn more about what inspires people to hold fast to ideas about the world that are radically different from our own.

Should we start a thread on Holocaust deniers now?

Salut!

My Speech, My Peace, My Friends.
I, soulcrates, am campaigning for a position as
moderator for the 1st Amendment Club. I am very glad
to be part of this ground breaking, 1st election
ever held for moderators in Gameknot's history! I
feel I would make a great asset, and look out for the
clubs best interest in all of my decision making.

I would bring to the moderators team; a great
amount of honesty, empathy, knowledge, and
leadership. In this, I would help acknowledge the
intent of the 1st Amendment, and let everyone know
that in a responsible manner they are free to speak
their minds, and to question authority within
reason. Without this freedom we would not have a
club in which to debate freely, and congregate our
intellectual minds in the first place.

I swear that if voted for and elected, I will
uphold this right for all future members, and limit
them only when it could possibly injure the club's
good standing with Gameknot. Whether that be
through a threat towards another member, the club, a
country, an organization, or anything that could put
our club at odds with Gameknot administration in general.

Best of luck to everyone,

Soulcrates

I'm asking not to vote for me
I joined to make sure ppl wouldn't automaticly become mods by lack of other candidates. Enough members have joined to form a good and balanced team so I'm asking not to vote for me. I won't be able to spend much time at this forum.

I ask future mods to discuss moderating issues in the mod thread rather than private using pm. There should't be reasons to hide or keep secet whatever you have to say. I expect elected mods to be open and transparent. Try to compare moderating with politics. How would you feel if decisionmaking in a country was secret? Would you know whom to trust?

I suggest the mod thread to be open for all members. Everyone should have the right to defend their case if their postings are subject of debate.

Good luck to all candidates, use "delete" with care and most of all have fun!

as mod I promise free strippers and cocaine for everyone!!!

ok, seriously, I am the "OM" the "original moderator," coincidentally you can hum that word (OM) while
meditating if you're into meditating, that has to be a plus to my campaign (ever wonder why the french
spell things so strange? I was talking to a young man from sweeden this weekend who refuses to learn
french because it is like learning to two languages - the spelling and the saying)

I have digressed! If I am moderator I will make sure no one gets to digress, everyone stays strictly on
topic, and no one has any fun! No wait! That's not it . . . did I mention the cocaine and strippers?

Anyway, I think generally, I've been very cool, calm, collected (that's what we call alliteration folks!
supposed to be persuasive; look at the shiney, moving object; you are getting sleepy, sleeeeeeepy!) I
have deleted one post (actually three, I self-deleted two posts for the better of the club and will do so
again if necessary, because that's the kind of "G" I be, yo) for laguage violation, and one whole thread
after moderator vote. I have been fair, even to those I do not like. I listen to the opinions of my fellow
mods, and I am not a cowboy (in the sense that GWB is a cowboy running round the world kicking arse
and taking names . . . however, when it comes to saving a horse and riding a cowboy, I am *definitely*(!)
a cowboy, save the horse folks, he's tired).

I love this place the way it is with all of us coming to together to discuss weighty issues or shoot the bull.
This place is still new and the exact operating procedures are still in flux, but I think that the moderators
here so far have dealt with issues reasonably and fairly. I intend to keep this type of moderator style.

Finally, since this election is a popularity contest of sorts . . . please vote for me . . . please . . . PLEASE!
. . . I SAID PLEASE! If you do not you wil hurt my feelings. You wouldn't want to hurt my feelings would
you? Jerk!

*sigh* I'm a loser

i think kem has already stole the show. pie. mmm.

quite honestly speaking, i don't care if i'm a mod or not. sure, it'd be fun having those extra buttons to play with, and go on a deleting frenzy for the amusment of myself, but then the novelty would soon wear off. but i put myself up to give you all more choice, if you guys actually think i should be a mod, then hey, i'll do it...

me, as a mod, would be pretty much exactly the same as i am now, except i'd delete a post if it were clearly against gk rules. i'll do my bit to keep the club ticking along, whether that be helping to sift through the thousands of applicants or booting people for a laugh. i'll continue to shout out my absurd opinions about butter. i'll happily tell someone if i think they are in the wrong, though i would not expect my words to carry more weight due to my "modness". i'll respect everyone here as a person, as i already do. blah blah blah.

i'm bored of this speech. can't we talk about butter instead? i much prefer butter to margerine, i know it rips the bread apart if you don't take it out of the fridge half an hour before you use it, but it does taste so much nicer. especially on toast. i think i might have a couple of slices of toast and a cup of tea. and some pie later. mmm.

vote tugger.

Climbing up on my soapbox..we don't say stump over here..I will keep this brief.
Friends, members, ladies and gentlemen. In my last election speech, I gave the reason why I feel that the clubs are important, not just the clubs but any place we can go to freely express our views. Continuing I said " I believe the position of a mod carries with it a responsibility, even among our little group.. our little band who have got together to form a club on some inconsequential chess site. The responsibilty of a mod is to fairly encourage a free exchange of views ". My views have not changed. I have tried to act fairly. I have tried, in my capacity as a moderator, to view all posts impartially, with a total disregard of the views expressed. I have tried to encourage debate in threads, well those where I was not totally out of my depth. I have tried, usually unsuccessfully, to fight some of the minor Injustices that I feel may have occurred in the clubs recently. Thats all I can do...try.
Give me the opportunity to continue trying, and I wiil give it my best shot..thats a promise.

Thanks.
Here is a new effort by the members of this forum. It is not a trivial matter, this election of ours. It has consequences. Who you place at the helm of any organization, small or large, will from that time forward set the culture of that group. No need to get too serious here, after all, its just a chess forum, where we rarely talk about chess. Nevertheless, you may have experience in other forums wherein the mods and fouder have exited the members on whim.

This forum is all about keeping members. Keeping members who are off-the-mark. Keeping members who have nothing-to-say. Keeping members who say-too-much. Keeping members who have nowhere-else-to-go.

This forum is all about truth. Not the kind of truth you look for in an argument, but rather, the kind of truth you expect from your friends. The truth that comes from a basic assumption of honesty. The truth that really matters, that is, saying your piece without the threat of being ousted. The truth that one hopes for; you can be heard here, and helped along toward greater understanding, but not shunned.

This forum is all about inclusion, and justice. There is no need for a description of the membership, we are from all-walks-of-life. There is no need to wonder if this person, or that person is politically left, right, center, or ambivalent, we are all seeking-answers. There is no need for a reckoning-of-progress, that comes to each individual on his own-time.

The biggest forum, no. The fastest growing, probably not. The most posts per 10-days, the Brits have that. As an aside, if you calculate the most posts in 10-days per member, we are number 1. But of what consequence is that? None. What is most important, is that each member here is FREE to express their view on ANY subject (boundary=GK), and they will be heard. Each member is FREE to defend their view, they will be heard. Each member is FREE to attack other views (with tact), they will be heard.
Come here, be reasonable, you can stay here.

I am probably going to have the worst speach.. since im a kid, anyways, here it goes.

This club has a lot of growth in threads and other sorts. With more threads, we will need more mods. The reason I want to be a mod is cause I like to sticky threads(for mods know what that means) participate in the mod thread, and look at deleted stuff!

AKA, mods have a lot of power and have special rights.

Eldude

(Terrible speech huh?)

P.S: If your crazy, you'll like me as mod. MUWHAHAHSAHAH!

My friend wants world domination. Should that be in the random comment thread?
