defensive styles
I have recently had a couple of games were my opponent is setting up what looks like a blockade, and when challenged he/she back off. When they have now new territory to stake out they begin making inocuous, useless moves waiting for my strategy. I don't mind trading pieces in order to move the game along and strengthen my position, but I won't give a rook for a pawn unless I'm gonna 'mate them.
Has anyone any advice in "moving" that process up?

possibly helpful?
The only thing that I could suggest is that when this style of play is encountered, it may be best to drop any tactical style & move towards a more strategic game. In other words, perhaps best not to concentrate on wekening the opponents lines, but only making moves which are directed towards a possible victory even though they may still have a stong team. The only reason is that if they are making innocuos moves, then they may leave possible defensive weakness in the long term. I don't think that this will be a solution for most of the games you describe, but for some games it may help.I t depends really on your opponent's ability to forsee a loss before it occurs.

I'll try that
I think you may be right about that. So far I've lost more than I've won against that style, so anything new would be an improvement. Thanks
