Who is your favorite professional sports team?
spygirl
10-Jan-07, 08:55

University of Maryland Women's Basketball Team
Not exactly professional (as they're collegiate), but they're my favorite sports team...

NCAA Champions last year.

They love playing the game, and they love playing the game as a team. And there's really no big money in professional women's basketball...so they're playing for the love of the game.

And, unlike watching a lot of their male counterparts, a lot of them are academic all americans.

Their games are fun to watch.

If I had to pick a professional team, I'd pick the Baltimore Ravens.

What sports do you play?
chessbeatswork
10-Jan-07, 09:22

Yes, chess is a sport...
It posssesses an objective goal of victory (as opposed to, say, figure skating, in which the scoring is subjective), and contains elements of active offense and defense. So I play that. I used to play a lot of ice hockey, but no longer. If one considers billirds a sport, that's another. But that's about it.

If you could purchase one work of art (with price as no object) what would it be?
rilke
10-Jan-07, 09:36

The School of Athens
it seems unfair to choose only one...to me there are to many great works of art to choose. But to narrow to one, I will take Rapahel's masterpiece fresco "The school of Athens". I tinvolves all the great minds of antiquity of Socrates, Plato, Euclid, Pytagoras, even Raphael himself is painted. The architecture work used for this fresco is something to admire>>

Who is your favorite bad character or Villian in Literature or Play?
gusr
10-Jan-07, 10:51

The Phantom of the Opera
I've been fascinated by the phantom since I first read the book. His loneliness and turmoil are touching, sad, and truly frightening all at once. His character is such that you can see how he repulses people, yet you feel bad for thinking that way. Also, I like the creepy genious aspect of his character. HE is as compelling, mysterious, and interesting as he is terrifying.

Do you think time travel is possible?
chessbeatswork
11-Jan-07, 07:49

Possible, but not practical..
In the strictest sense, we already are travelling through time. But we're doing so strapped into a vehicle that can only go one speed and one direction. Travelling at or near the speed of light would result in a form of time travel (your clock would slow down so that years would pass for those observing you while you barely aged at all). But this would only propel you forward in time.

There is also speculation about the existence of wormholes which, assuming one could pass through them and survive, would lead to an entirely different point in the space-time contimuum and thus possibly back in time.

Sticking with the time travelling theme:

You find a device that allows you to meet yourself at exactly half your current age. You only have thirty seconds to interact. What brief pearl of wisdom do you impart to your past self?

Don't be a lawyer
'nuff said

I would've told myself either to (1) go to the naval academy as planned or (2) stick with computer programming like I did in high school (this was pre-internet)...I could've made a fortune!

What is your life's one regret?

Going to Mt. Everst or going to the Himalayas and why?

The ultimate test of will. That which does not kill me will make me stronger.

To which of the seven deadly sins (pride, anger, sloth, greed, lust, gluttony, envy) are you most susceptible?
rilke
11-Jan-07, 11:03

sloth
But this has to be clear. I will feel in a way like Dante, when he asked this question himself....he felt was guilt of sloth, but a spiritual sloth. Not being able to strive more for his spiritual side. Of course on the Divine Comedy, sloth means something else.
I have done a lot research on this matter; but latety I have postpone my spiritual journey!

Dante place his enemies, friends, famous people, politicians, kings, religious ppl, a pope, etc in Inferno.
If you have to write your own Dvine Comedy, which people would you place on Hell?
chessbeatswork
12-Jan-07, 09:30

I've weighed my answer carefully
The original answer that came to mind was to say all of the same people, seeing as human nature and humanity's societal structures have not fundamentally changed in the century's ensuing Dante's work. But I gave it more thought and decided that, for me, a better answer would be.....

No one. I would place no one in Hell, for even as a commentary I have no right to judge. If I am to place anyone in Hell then they can surely take me along for company. I will leave judgement and justice to God.

On a lighter note...

spygirl
15-Jan-07, 06:51

I would choose to be my dog...
Not any dog, mind you...but my dog. (some dogs have horrible lives)

Can't get any better than that...he has the life of Riley...well taken care of, well fed, gets to sleep and play all day, never lacks for love and attention....

What is your favorite television show?

Which of the four traditional virtues (temperance, prudence, courage, justice) do you best exemplify?

You are a writer, and you are about to write your first sentence of this Horror novel. Please write this chilling sentence.
chessbeatswork
15-Jan-07, 13:23

It was a dark and stormy night....
No, no, no. That wouldn't be it. Actually, I believe the first sentence of most horror novels tend to be relatively innocuous. It seems that horror is usually first prefaced with the state of normality that is about to be rent asunder. But I'll give it a shot anway:

Jebediah's blood turned to ice and his bowels to water as he beheld the atrocity that the ancient ritual has conceived.

I know, truly bad. But darn it, if I was any good at writing I wouldn't make a living crunching numbers.

Whom do you prefer: Edgar Allen Poe or H.P. Lovecraft?

If you won a million dollars what would you do with it?
chessbeatswork
15-Jan-07, 15:46

Here's what I'd want to do with it...
...spend the rest of my life in the tropics and die a million dollars poorer with the best tan and the biggest smile anyone's ever seen. There'd be trampolines and a trumpet somewhere in there, too.

Here's what I'd actually do:

Pay off the mortgage
Set up a college fund for any future progeny (can always use it for retirement fun if that never happens)
Set aside $100,000 for various charities (don't know which)
Invest the balance except for ten thousand dollars
Take said ten thousand to Vegas

You're the head of an organization: Is it better to be loved or feared?
spygirl
16-Jan-07, 06:37

Loved
People aren't themselves when they're in an environment of fear....they'll do only what they need to to get by, for the sake of saving their own reputation, job, or whatever. When you're loved, people want to go that extra mile for you or the organization. When you're loved, people are more inclined to believe in a vision, dream, etc.

Having good morale can go a long way in productivity or achieving your goals...and it's hard to have good morale when fear is in the back of your head.

You have investors, so money's not an object...if you could start your own business, what would it be?
chessbeatswork
16-Jan-07, 09:19

Not technically starting a business, but....
I'd purchase a team from one of the lower levels of English football, somebody like Leyton Orient or Port Vale, and I'd work at building them into a Premiership club.

>>>what is the most selfless thing you have done?<<<

I adopted a cat with three legs and no tail. Why selfless? Because I'm allergic to cats. That, and I resisted naming it 'Tripod'.

My ideal day off is illegal in forty-four countries, and barely accpetable in Singapore. Nevertheless, it would consist of watching soccer, playing chess, reading and then going to the bar to catch a great band.

If you could play a sport professionally, what would it be?

Since women's pro sports are limited...there's longevity in tennis, but no guaranteed contracts. WNBA has guaranteed contracts but doesn't pay well.....

I'm better at tennis though...so tennis

You are about to finish writing your thriller novel, now it comes the big question, who murdered the Owner of the mansion?

The Butler
The Cook
The Lawyer
The Wife
The Stepson
His Best friend

What was the motive?
gusr
01-Feb-07, 09:49

The Cook
The cook did it just to see if he could get away with it, like those kids Leopold and Loeb who killed another kid for the same reason.

Imagine you had to fight the foulest, scariest, ugliest thing you ever imagined. It's just as terrifying as it is disgusting... The sounds it makes will cause you to have nightmares for the rest of your life, and if any part of it touches your bare skin you will be disfigured for the rest of your life. The person in charge of the fight gives you a choice, and warns you that you must decide in less than two seconds or they will feed the person you love most to this monster...
This is the choice: Would you rather fight the monster blindfolded, or completely naked?
