Name your own chess board and color pieces.
Instead of the traditional board and and black*white pieces colors; use your own and ideal colors.

Here is mine:

Red vs Black.

same board colors.

Red moves first.

Wow scaredstiff, from my point of view, you are a very lucky guy!

I have one chess set with Roman army soldiers, and its pretty cool (but also very fragile and unfortunately pieces are not very stable).. but LotR chess set is something special for me.

Do you use it for playing?

I used it once with my son, but nothing's better than the Staunton design to play a serious game. Anyway the LotR pieces are made of lead and will probably last for generations.

I must agree with you, for a serious game - a serious design.. simple (but still beautiful) shapes of pieces to keep concentration on the game itself

...
I usually play with staunton pieces ( ebony, double weighed, leather felted ) on a pallissander board. GORGEOUS .

Hi Zrinka,
I hope you do eventually get your wish - your very own, beloved Lord of the Rings chess set, it is awesome!! When you do, let me know how you like it, and if it's fun playing with the incredible pieces... I always loved that movie series, and especially like the actor, Viggo Mortenson, who played Aragorn. He is so sexy. Well, I suppose 'good-looking' or 'handsome' are better word choices for this 'family' forum... (sorry kiddos, you have to wait until you're legal to understand what I mean).

Take care & keep smiling,

Cyn

Glass
White glass pieces vs purple glass.
Same for the board.

Glass vs Wood
We have a glass chess set - the pieces and squares on the board are clear and cloudy white glass. It is quite difficult to play on this set, as the colors (dark vs light) are very difficult to distinguish from one another. Personally, I like the professional boards the best - in solid wood, of course. I really like online chess the most, where I have time to think... GK is #1

Tall pieces
Just like the gigantic pieces and board
used in the first Harry Potter movie .

I had made my own
A chess set with clear colored marbles red and white. Black wood for the black and natural
color wood for the white pieces.

Medium size marbles I used as the body of the pawns, with a wooden
base, and smaller white marbles for the top.
The dignitaries with large marble bodies, and with wood head and base,

I used epoxy glue to hold the wood and marbles to the wood sections,
and this was what went wrong.

Very soon the pieces began to fall apart because the epoxy glue would
not hold the wood to the marbles.

I was very sad and discouraged, so I put everything in an old sock, and
put them away somewhere.

The reason I had used epoxy, is that I had seen it used holding other materials
to glass bottles in a store, and it worked really well.

I figured the problem was that the marbles were too slick, and the glue has to
have something rough to attach to glass, but to this date, I have abandoned the
idea of trying to try again because of my big disappointment, and I do not want
to go through that again.

If the project had worked, I would have sent a picture for you to see.

Magnetic metal chess set
I fancy owning a chess set with pieces made of metal (maybe brass vs. aluminum)
in their natural colors installed with magnet on their bases, played over board
made out of steel sheet with dark brown and white squares.

Nuts and Bolts
Wing nuts for the knights, etc. I thought about a set like this then saw one. Also thought of making one from spent bullet cartridges.

You need a pretty serious lathe for turning metal rod for solid pieces. The aluminum will be much lighter than brass, of course.

Sand Blasting
the marbles would create a rough surface for the glue. There are some glass epoxy glues that work well--my wife uses them.

Board
Alternating squares of slightly rusted mild steel and polished magnetic stainless. These would have to be glued or tack welded to a base and, of course, tack welds would slightly discolor the squares.

You could make the light squares out of thin aluminum, but they will weaken the magnetic hold against the steel base plate.

I have spray painted steel boards. I am experimenting with oven baked enamels. The first time I tried it a chemical reaction stained the enamel. You really need very clean plates, and probably a clean oven too.

Marble
Cut stone, not glass. Green and white marble pieces on a marble board. That is my heaviest set.

I also splurged and bought a professional staunton chess set, roll up board with weighted plastic pieces, and a time clock, with its own black carrying case.

But one set I am interested in is the very old one found in England, of ivory pieces carved in Norway. I think they were ivory. Will post a link:

www.etsy.com

This is the famous Isle of Lewis set. I think it is about 1200 years old.
