should New Orleans be rebuilt…
or was it foolish to build a city there in the first place?

Let's look at it this way!!
If we wanted to build a city from scratch and
we wanted that city to be home to about
1 million people would we build that city on
the Gulf Coast in an area that is below sea
level?

In my opinion to make the choice to build
the city would be lunacy. Therefore I think
we should think long and hard about rebuilding
a city that is vulnerable to the forces of
nature.

It would be wrong to rebuild New Orleans
as it once was.

We can maybe restore the historic districts
and the French Quarter and leave it at that.

Chuck…
I could not have said it better myself.

Yes, but I am sure it would.....
not be "politically correct" to NOT
rebuild so we [all of us] will shell out the
Billions upon Billions to rebuild and maybe
have it happen again.

Well I think it needs to be rebuilt as it serves as a major port for the gulf and the Mississippi river. With everything needing to be rebuilt, new zoning and building codes can make buildings better prepared to handle it. The levys will also be rebuilt I'm guessing, stronger and maybe take in account environmental needs.

I think you are right that it......
will be rebuilt but the "need" I
question.

It will take months to repair the port alone.
What will we do int the meantime? Probably
divert the activities normally at that port.
If we can do without it for months we can
probably do without it.

OK, that being said suppose we do rebuild the
port what about the rest of the city? Over the
years New Orleans built on the surrounding
marsh lands that served as a natural barrier
and buffer to the forces of nature. Namely
hurricanes and floods. Why not leave or
rebuild that marshland. Do we really need
a city or 1.5 million people?

I think the entire question needs to be looked
at by our government officials of both parties
and not react in the "heat of the moment."

I don't care how well…
or how strong you make the new levies—the ocean (or gulf in this case) is one of those
indominatable forces of nature and it will win in the end. I heard today that the cost of this
catastrophe could reach $150,000,000,000. That's .15 TRILLION dollars. We should take a lesson
from this and not build any more bathtub metropolises.

I think the figure will go.....
higher than that. First estimates, especially government
projects, or usually off by 400 or 500%.

Ridiculous but true!!

We will rebuild New Orleans!! I think it is a mistake
but will will do it because it is politically correct.

im in complete agreement
i have made the point in another forum. how much do you spend to make something suitible for human occupation. some have said that we should have spent more on the levees but as honolulou has pointed out... you can never be sure your manmade structure will hold up. so if we spend a trillion dollars and the levees still break should we reconsider or should we spend 2 trillion?

BTW, honolulu has left this club!!
Although his thoughts have some merit I have
read other thoughts of his and I do not agree.

The futility of rebuilding NO will be emphasized
by the aftermath of Rita.
