Welcome and Introductions
We all start somewhere. I chose the openings. You will see in my profile page that I regularly play the Queen's Pawn Opening. As defense, I answer 1.e4 with the Sicilian. I believe I am becoming another Narjdorf fanatic. I answer 1.d4 with 1...Nf6.
I also became a member of another, now defunct, openings club. I enjoyed the thematic tournaments and, even at the time of this writing, I am involved in a Sicilian Thematic Tournament. What a great way to look at a favorite opening from both offense and defense! As we grow, and maybe if, I hope to enjoy some more of those. In the meantime, I think we need moderators and membership. What say you? Joe

Hi. I was a member of the old openings group before it went out of commission. (I actually joined just a few weeks before the group closed). I'm looking forward to improving my game and learning how to play openings better here.

Hi guys
Hello all, As you are aware the old club owner has given up chess "yellowdragon" which left no-one to fund for the club, I was on of the moderators. Joe has generously offered to pay to start this new club again with fresh enlightenment, I hope to see stronger players contribute this time and participating in ideas and discussions. I mean let's face it, we were all beginners at one stage surely we all wanted help too and let's not be selfish so everyone benefits in that particular way. I will be happy to become a moderator and promotor of this club, as for now we are trying to recruit all the old members and the new members, stay tuned for more activities and events.

Hi everyone.
I'm happy to be a member of the club.

I've been playing chess since 2003 and I quickly learned that some knowledge of opening play is a MUST.

I hope I can contribute to the club in some way even if it's only with my questions.

Hello
I was a member of the old opening club which went bust. Thanks very much to chess4him for setting up this one. I am looking forward to learning more in this club as the last one undoubtedly improved my game.

My favourite openings:

as white, Ruy Lopez, almost exclusively whenever I can.
against the Sicilian I play the Morra Gambit
I am usually happy to meet the Philidor or the French.

as black, I usually play to allow the Ruy Lopez, have some knowledge in the Petrov and I am starting to play the Sicilian too. Against 1.d4 I play 1...Nf6 which I think is best.

That's enough of my secrets.

Hi Everybody...
'd just like to say hi. I play the Evans Gmabit as white and am undecided as what opening to play as black. I used to play the caro-kann but am unsure of it.

Hope to learn a lot.

Hi guys I joined the old club just before it broke up and didnt really contribuite too much in the forums. Now with a new start I hope to contribuite more and interact with members. I like closed openings and play d4. I play the dragon against e4 (though I think the French is more my style) and the KID against d4.

All the best,
Andrew

thanks and hello
very glad to be part of the club. I like openings because it's the essentialal
more or less for the main offense. I wish I knew this area better. I go to
an online school for chess so I study chess. My goal is to break 1600
again. Stopped playing for awhile and have to get some confidence back.

Hi to all!
I like to play every classical opening, so i hate moves like 1.b3 and similars
I think that the study of an opening is a way to improve the whole chess strength, and so only the studying and playing openings played and commented by great players allows this!

Hello, everyone -
I usually play the French v. 1.e4 and the Dutch v. 1.d4; v. the English I play 1....e5.
As white I prefer less traveled roads, like the Trompovsky, the Torre and the Veresov.
Looking forward to the club and this forum!

Hello guys
Thanks for letting me into this club. My real name is Ashley.

I play 2 openings against 1.e4 my main one Sicilian Dragon and my backup is French defence.
for fast games I sometimes ( but only for fast games) play centre counter. Why do I have 2 openings vs 1.e4? well because most people know what I play and may plan something totally devastating against it so I can play my secret weapon.

I play against 1.d4 grunfeld ( my main one) and sometimes 1.d5. And sometimes I play other stuff, but not that often.

against 1. Nf3 Nf6 and then 2.b6

against 1.c4 g6

against 1.f4 g6.

I play 1.e4 as White. I try scotch gambits and also the max lange attack. Soon I will try Bishop's game. I play alapins V.S sicilian. advance V.S french.

My target is to try and get my rating to 2000!!

Welcome Ashley
Great comments Ashley! I like your idea of a backup reportoire and you have put a lot of thinking into it. I also enjoy the Grunfeld as defense and would probably put that in my "hate" list when I am playing offense (white). Welcome! Joe

Hi
Thanks for accepting me in the club.
My best results, up to now, are with the Polish opening and the Caro-Kann defence.
I've experienced some difficulties with the French defence and the Benko gambit.
I love thematic tournaments and I organize some myself on gameknot.

Hello
I live on Long Island, Ny, and have been playing chess since I am 7 years old. Finding players was always hard for me until the internet boom. Since then i have played close to 25,000 games, mostly blitz, which while fun really didnt improve my chess understanding. since switching to longer time controls and Correspondence chess my game has improved dramatically.
I will try to help where i can, feel free to ask questions.

Hello
I am originally from Georgia and I learned to play chess in high school and at university...then I did not touch a piece until about a year ago. My most consistent opening is e4 (or d4 occasionally) and I have experimented with a number of defenses with varying degrees of failure. So I need all the help i can get.

Thanks for accepting me into the club.

Peace

hey guys...
...i have a lot to learn in order to become a better chess player, and improving upon my opening play seems the best place to start to improve my game as a whole - so im happy to be a member of this club
as white i play d4, hoping to get a chance to play the stonewall attack. as black i play the sicilian against e4, and try for laskers defense against d4.

hi.
It's about time I write something here as well. Openings I like playing White; Paul Keres Attack with Qf3 after 1. e4 c5, Evans Gambit after 1. e4 e5.

Paul Keres Attack with Qf3:
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 a6 6. Be3 e6

7. g4 h6 8. Qf3! Nbd7 9. Rg1 Ne5 10. Qh3 and White has a comfortable position. There are some alternative variations, (7. ... e5 for example), all lead to interesting games with an advantage for White. At least, I haven't seen a loss for White from this position on GameKnot.
Interesting sample game: board #8031623 (you don't even have to play it very well to get an overwhelming position. After Black has traded off both Knights, d5 becomes a delicious spot for the White Knight)

I used to play the Danish Gambit when I was younger, but I have found that if Black plays everything correctly (for instance, following the GameKnot DB), he doesn't have much of a problem and can have an easy endgame, which is usually won. White has to work hard to prove it is worth half a point!

Openings I like playing Black; Sicilian Najdorf after 1. e4 c5; Fajarowicz after 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5!? 3. dxe5 Ne4.
I vary every now and then because things don't work out like I want to, but these are the main lines I focus on...

I am also new to the club but not new to chess. I learned how to play chess from my 6th grade teacher. It was 10 years later that I ever played anyone in a game. After that it was quite a few more years that I could find anyone that played chess. Now, I find this site and have unlimited opponents but, I have never learned strategies, opening moves, etc. I just play by the seat of my pants.

Yo
I enjoy the sicilian especially the Dragon. You may have noticed my Sicilian and Dragon tournamnets. Since I am only allowed 16 tournamnets at the present the championship rounds will be later (More on those at a later time).

I need to learn some of the other openings especially for d4. I have an ICCF match with a guy who is opening with f4 so I need to learn about Bird's opening.

I live currently in Thailand about 40 kilometers above Bangkok. I teach English at a small college. I really love it over here.

Of you are ever in the Dayton Ohio area look up the Dayton Chess Club. It
s one of the best in the midwest. May soon rival sone of the New York Clubs.

I also play on the It's your turn and Chesshere sites. Each offer something a litle different. This one is my favorite.

Hello Guys (again, in some cases)
Some of you may remember me from when the other openings club was around before it "died" in July 2007. As many of you are aware, I use this site mainly to practice openings via Thematic tournaments, though I occasionally accept a heads-up match if someone is specifically looking to work on a certain opening where I appear to be the best fit for an opponent.

Also, those that know me from before probably know that I have tried almost everything, and play a wider variety of openings than most people do. Part of that is because in Over The Board tournaments, my "pet" lines tend to be very drawish in certain variations, and I just got sick and tired of draw to players 300 below.

That said, here's my main reportoire that I play OTB when playing masters:

White:

1.d4
Against the QGD Orthodox - Exchange
Against the Slav - 3.Nc3 and 4.e3
Against the Semi-Slav - Shabalov Gambit (6.Qc2 and 7.g4)
Against the QGA - 3.e4
Against the King's Indian - Gligoric Variation (Classical wth 7.Be3)
Against the Nimzo-Indian - Leningrad Variation (4.Bg5)
Against the Benoni - Flick-Knife Attack (a.k.a. Taimanov Variation)
Against the Benko - 4.cxb5 and 5.b6
Against the Dutch - 2.Bg5
Against the Modern/Pirc (1...g6/1...d6) - 150 Attack
Against 1...e6 (attempting a Dutch Deferred or English Defense) - 2.e4 (French)

Black:

Against 1.e4 - French
Against 1.d4 - Clarendon Court Defense
Against 1.c4 - English Defense
Against 1.Nf3 - 1...f5

Other openings I play (often against lower-rated opponents, as I hate facing things like the French Exchange against a player that's 300 below me. If some 300 above me wants to play the exchange, I'll take the easy draw!):

White: 1.Nc3
Black vs 1.e4: Sicilian Taimanov, Sicilian Scheveningen, Latvian Gambit
Black vs 1.d4: Chigorin Defense, Semi-Slav Defense

Hi!
I've known how to move the pieces around a chess board for a while but I've only learned how to "play" in the last year. I'm now getting more serious about chess and the openings are an essential part of a chess players bag of tricks. Hopefully I can be as helpful to others as you guys/gals are going to be to me.

Hello
Hello everyone,
My name is Rodrigo, and I've been playing competitive chess (on and off) since I was 14; I'm a complete opening junky, I have tons of books on opening theory and so when I discovered this club just today I was delighted! Thanks for accepting me as part of the club. Also, right now I'm changing my complete opening repertoire with white to 1. d4, after playing the English for many many years. Hence I feel I discovered this club at the exact right time! With black, I play the Caro-Kan against 1.e4, and either the Slav or the QG accepted against 1. d4; I play various lines of the Symmetrical English against 1. c4 and really love playing black against both the English and the Reti. I keep a very small number of games, but I'll be delighted to join any thematic tournament organized by this club, as long as it's related to the openings I play.
