12 ... Nxe5
Why are people in such a hurry to lose a pawn?

What compensation does black have for a healthy center pawn after 12 ... O-O? How is the position after 12 ... O-O 13.Nxd7 Nxd7 14.Bd2 intending 15.Qf3 in any way good for black?

We're a pawn down, saddled with defending the d5 pawn, and white controls the e file. We don't get any play on c file because we decided it was a good idea to spend 2 moves to trade off our dark square bishop earlier in the game, so we'll never get enough pressure on c3 to matter.

We really need to play 12 ... Nxe5 followed by 13 ... Nfd2. This will force white to recapture on e5 with a pawn, sealing the e file, lets us play Qxc3 to get the pawn back.

hityerclock speaks the truth
why on earth should Black give up a pawn???

I agree

Move 13. O-O
My vote is O-O. We need to castle while we have the opportunity and to connect our rooks making them more effective and powerful.

Following the plan
My vote is 13...Nfd7

13...Nfd7
I also looked at Nfg4 attacking the f2 pawn but Nfd7 looks a bit safer.

Nfd7
Remember our plan from last move.

We're going to play 13...Nfd7, then white has to play 14.d4 and recapture the N on e5 with his pawn, sealing the e-file. That's why our K will remain safe even though he's in the center.

Then we're going to play 14...Qxc3, recovering our pawn with with a decent position.

We don't want to find out what happens after 13...Nfg5 14.Bxd5 - white is opening up lines, our K is in the center, and the e file is open. I want no part of that.

danger!!!!
to embark on a adventure with 13....Nfg5 while our King is still in the center is highly
dangerous!!. 13...Nfd7 is the proper move.

Agree
It appears Knfd7 is the safest move....play it out

I agree with the majority
13.Nfd7 is best.

Doesn't appear to be that much of anything else; hate loosing the Kn but we get a p...any other thoughts?

I'm on board
Let's go with 14...Qxc3
hityerclock
19-Oct-10, 18:42

14 ... Qxc3
I'm starting to like our position after 15.dxe5 O-O. White's queen-side pawns are weak, and we'll get good play on the half-open c file.
doji
22-Oct-10, 08:23

So
14... Qxc3 it will be!!

15. ... Nb6
Our d pawn is attacked twice. We must protect it!
if 16. Be3 then 16. ... O-O 17. Bxb6 axb6 18.Bxd5 Rfd1! wins the pinned bishop.

25-Oct-10, 17:40

15...Qc6
Why not 15...Qc6 to protect the pawn on d5, then if 16.Qf3 0-0.
hityerclock
25-Oct-10, 17:50

Nb6 or Qc6?
After 15 ... Nb6, white can force a Q trade with 16.Qd3 (otherwise 17.Qg3 looks dangerous), after which we no longer have the c4 square for the N, though white's d pawn can potentially become a target.

15 ... Qc6 keeps the Q's on the board. We also retain the possibility of playing ... Nc5 later.

I'd rather keep the Q's on the board, but that's just personal preference, I don't see anything wrong with ... Nb6.

Why not trade Queens?
Trading Queens does not bother me. Despite that, hityerclock's analysis is good; so, I vote for 15...Qc6.

2 votes for 15... Qc6 and two for 15... Nb6, anyone who can break the tie?

15...Qc6
There is actually 1 vote for Nb6 (a_random_guy) and three for Qc6 (caknight, opengames and hityerclock). The move played would be Qc6.
