Main prize: The immortal fame of having played the "Game of the Month"! Secondary prize: A chance to win a real, free, mailed-to-your-home-address chess book!! What are the rules? * The game must have been played on Gameknot. * The game must be recent - that is, it must have concluded in the current month. * The game must be submitted for entry no later than the 10th the following month. How do I enter my game? * Simply write a message, with a link to the game, in this thread. So, how does my game win? * The games are evaluated by the GOM judge(s), who select one of them based on (more or less) objective criteria as "Game of the Month". * At year's end, after the GOM competition for December 2013, the GOM judges will compare the GOM 2013 winners and elect one of those games as the "Game of the Year 2013". Uhm, my rating is not so good. Do I really stand a chance? * Sure! The games are compared and evaluated not only based on how "good" they are but also with an eye to the players involved! The list of previous GOM winners span the whole spectrum from 1400 to almost 2300! OK. Say I win, how will that get me famous? * ALL GOM get a link to their player page and the game in the "Game of the Month - Hall of Fame" thread! * Additionally, the "Game of the Year 2013" winner gets a seperate entry too!! That's fine, but how do I win the chess book? * Simple! Just win the "Game of the Year 2013" title and we will mail the chess book to whatever address you supply! So, which chess book am I going to win? * Err... we don't know - yet! But the GOM 2013 sponsor (rmannstaedt) will select the book based on your previous games, present personality, and the exact position of the stars (as calculated for the approximate date and time of your game). Oh! OK, I guess... Anything else I should know? * If less than 3 games are entered, the current GOM contest is extended for another month. * A player may not have more than one game in any GOM contest (except Game of the Year). If you enter more than one game for any GOM contest, the last entry will be used. * The games will be reviewed and judged by one or more GOM judges, appointed by the club moderators. * The GOM judges must not themselves have entered any game into the current GOM contest (any such game is automatically withdrawn). * The verdict of the GOM judges is final and not open for appeal (but debates are still very welcome!)

But thinking about it, I actually see no good reason why a game cannot be entered by proxy, as long as the player you are entering the game for has okayed it. I still need to know which player you are entering the game for though.   I assume it is blake507 and not stahlberg? Best regards, Ruben

rmannstaedt 15-Jan-13, 01:03	GOM submission gandalfnefod 1/13/13 [moved to this thread by rmannstaedt] This was an exciting game for me and my opponent. I had a moment of inspiration at move 24, sacing the exchange for a couple of pawns a knight and and some checks. and from there on I had a great initiative. I played a series of second best moves from about move 30 to 37. I continually missed the e5 break, but when I finally did do it it signaled, the end. gsmickle is a good player who had beaten me in two previous games. But this game was mine. rmannstaedt 17-Jan-13, 05:13	Evaluation Guide Games are scored according to how good and interesting the play is. A more interesting game = more points. As "interesting" is always a subjective matter scoring can never be wholly neutral or objective, but the following schematics help a bit. SCORING THE PHASES ================= For a game covering all three phases, points are given according to the overall impression of the play (from both players) in each phase. This is where we reward things like overall player resourcefulness, flow/coherence of play, shocks and surprises, and those other aspects (like sheer entertainment value) which makes all of the difference between an excellent game and a boring one. Basically: how much did you like and enjoy that phase of the game? - Opening: 1-10 pts - Mid game: 1-10 pts - End game: 1-10 pts Note: if no end game phase, simply add 50% of the actual pts given for the opening+midgame phases (so that shorter games are not penalized just for missing out on the endgame phase). If in doubt of how to evaluate the phases, try comparing the various games with each other and then assign points to them based on how interesting/captivating/fun they are, relative to each other, for each phase. That is usually much easier than trying to grade them on an "absolute" scale. Also, I usually find games are in the 4-8 range, for each phase, rather than out on the extremes of the scale. LEVEL OF PLAY ============ Additional points are given for the overall level of play (positional, using imbalances, piece movements) of both players in the game as a whole. This is relative to the actual rating of the players, which means the bar is set higher for higher rated players. - Level of play: 1-5 pts BONUS POINTS ============ Bonus points are allocated for the following, from either player, each occurrence: - tactics (if sound/interesting): 1-3 pts per time - strong positional moves (if sound/interesting): 1-3 pts per time - interesting ideas: 1-3 pts per time - sacrifices (if sound/interesting): 2-5 pts per time - decisive/excellent moves: 1 pt per time - draw: 1-3 pts - mate (or forcing an opponent to resign by means of a mate threat): 1-5 pts PENALTIES ========= Penalty points are allocated for the following - but ONLY for the player who entered the game: - overlooking a mate (if reasonable): -3 pts - overlooking decisive moves: -2 pts - blunders (as per GK analysis): -2 pts - resignation: -3 pts Note: if the OTHER player makes a blunder, or resigns, or overlooks decisive moves, that will NOT result in a subtraction. Also, inaccuracies or mistakes (as per the GK analysis) will NOT result in a direct subtraction (may subtract from the overall impression of the game though). Likewise it is NOT counted as "overlooking a mate" just because the GK analysis finds the player missed an impossibly intricate mating sequence a gazillion moves long ("reasonable" should be evaluated relative to the player's actual rating).

It was pretty much opening and done! Ha ha ha not sure how the GOM brainstrust will go about scoring that one!

The tenth of the succeeding month is merely the deadline of submission but the game needs to be concluded during the preceding month (ie the month named, so in this case, Jan? TJ PS Okay so mostly I posted this just for the pun in the subject line!
rmannstaedt 06-Feb-13, 04:04	Yes, that's correct. If you conclude a game at, say, February 3rd, then that will go into the February GOM competition. If you conclude a game January 28th, you can submit that game for the January GOM until the deadline of February 10th. Nice pun
bookkeeper 07-Feb-13, 14:24	GOM--January I recently finished this game. I enjoyed injecting a Danish gambit into the Philidor's Defense. The middle game kept me on edge until Black's 22nd move. And I chuckled at the computer's calling my last move a blunder;I guess it gave me no points for supplying my f-pawn with a care-free path to queenland. Ed game

You don't have to worry about the GK calling your last move a blunder - the GK analysis engine is notoriously unreliable in endgames and your move was definitely not anywhere near the "blunder" category

It is also the only game I completed in January.   game I have Black in a Modern Benoni that turns into quite a tactical sort of battle, that resolves into a dynamically balanced endgame. Ooh... I see I missed the deadline. Shucks, bother and poot. Enjoy the game anyway, guys...
tipsyjourneyman 17-Feb-13, 04:41	ha ha ha well Ion, for submitting a drawn game as GotM, albeit too late, I tip my hat! Who says a GotM has to result in a win for the submitter? For me the standout of this game is that there is only one yellow marker by the dreaded GK engine and this an inaccuracy. Sound tactics from both sides, the 2000s showing us why they have such rankings! Poetry!

shamash 25-Feb-13, 18:21	blitzkov's fighting chess yes, and this gem is more than an ordinary game: a game like this renews faith in the supposedly passive English Opening, with its demonstrations: 1) that the ideas of the English permit a total, coordinated attack by White's pieces -- rook, Queen, both bishops, and 2) that dynamics beat statics: the dynamic energy of a mobile position can overpower the static structure: while Black harvested material gains as his Queen engorged herself on White's Kingside pawn structure, the dynamic energy latent in White's position allowed rook and bishops to mobilize and then coordinate their firepower into a mating attack on Black's neglected King. It's more than the game of the month: with its modern ideas of dynamic chess put into practice, blitzkov has produced the game of the year.
tipsyjourneyman 26-Feb-13, 03:43	patience is a virtue Well shamash sure is pleased with blitzkov's bishop blitz! But let's not call game of the year yet, as the tipsy is weighing in.   Ha ha ha unfortunately from the sublime to the prosaic, this game features no stunning moves nor sudden unleash of power from a coiled position. But that's exactly why I'm submitting it it is unusual for the tipsy to simply put in a workmanlike performance and, secure in the knowledge of the superiority of his own position (figured I had him at move 23), chip away until black was simply left with no more balls in play. (Plus I only completed 3 games in feb and this the only win!   ) So, it may not have advanced my ranking in any great leaps, nor furthered the glory of chess in any way, but I'm happy with it.   Hopefully the KoH enjoy its charming austerity, like two pieces of toast for breakfast.
