another approach to a captain
Recently, I was making a pairing and a captain had put himself up who had a LOT of timeouts (33%) with a 139 losing streak. Rating was on the floor, so underrated by almost 300 points. On his page he wrote an apology for all the timeouts because he had been really busy, but he had started a team, etc. etc. I decided to send him a private message and this is what I said. No names are being given. =================================================== I don't think you should be playing team games until you do something about your rating which you trashed from all of your timeouts. The challenges would be totally unfair. And as a captain, you should be aware of that. Posting an apology is not sufficient. If you are truly sorry, then play some non-team games until you have a normal rating, then come back to the challenge board and offer yourself for a fair game. ladylinda, captain of "The Knights of the Crystal Castle" ================================================== He replied to me, OK. And he took his challenge down off the board. I am please to see that maybe he is truly sorry and he will not challenge others for team play until his rating is at a normal and fair level. So, we can be an influence for good, fair, team play, if we take the initiative. ladylinda

another approach
ladylinda, I am well impressed with your persuasion powers, as this Captain has done none other than started 15 non-team games today, and not a team game in sight!

I was also very encouraged by this... when I saw that the challenge had come down and that there were no team games, but a lot a non-team games. When he gets his rating back up, I will be the first to offer/accept a match.

I have news
But this time, has nothing to do with GK violations. As you remember, earlier, I mentioned that our team was inactive for some time, shortly after becoming the captain and changing the name from Balance to Teacher And Learners. Well, part of the reason was because the co-captain before this one did not help to run a team smoothly. I waited for a long while as was patient for as long as possible. But, at least one member who was actually interested in becoming a co-captain left the team, and I actually wound up on his ignore due to inactivity. I just thought that was and that the person was just unusually patient. But, as time went on, I learned other wise. While, this person hasn't left yet, he complained to me for not getting new matches and inactivity from our team. Even though I don't always expect a co-captain to be able to match people (because sometimes it's not possible due to current and top 90 day rating differences), I expect them to try. Otherwise, why promote, then a captain has to keep running back and forth, if matches are to be assigned.

After a while, I looked for another candidate who could become a co-captain. I only has one, member, at the time who had the right membership. And, he's the one that complained, but's still a member. Due to health issues, however, he cannot become a co-captain. But, I finally found one. This member upgraded from a free member to premium subscriber, and he had the right membership. He was more then willing to become a co-captain. And, this new one is the best co-captain I've ever had. His name is ivic_wulfe. I mean, like me, he can't always assign a match, due to the work schedule. But whenever he's off, he's generally able to do so. In addition, this one is the first co-captain who goes beyond the call of duty by giving me very good advice on how to run a team more smoothly, so I'm very proud of him. Consequently, I warned the other co-captain, glennobrien, that I needed him to try harder to assign matches, otherwise, I might have to demote him to a regular member. As soon as he received the message, he left the team. Now, he if he reaply's to join the team, I'll accept his application, but I am never going to promote him into a co-captain again.

co-captains
It seems the decision to make someone a co-captain is an important and difficult decision. You want to be sure you are like minded in managing the team. Also, after you make someone a co-captain, if it doesn't work out, it is hard to undo without causing hurt feelings. I think working with someone for a while about some team issues before promoting could be helpful in precluding future problems. I have been working with a couple of people, and one has been very helpful. I am about to promote my first co-captain. Now to figure out how to co-ordinate challenges.

good on you jk - don't let these bullies push you around

Sorry to hear this
Sorry to hear this jk - you are a dear friend, and don't deserve abuse. A person's rating is just one factor about them. To me far more important is how they treat other people. Unless you happen to be the world champion there will always be someone who can play better than you and someone who is worse than you.
