djort 14-Dec-08, 18:13	Openning and beginner and average... This is a subjective opinion and a low elo opinion (mine,^^). What to do for our first move ? The objective is to have fun, try to improve and not to lose (too quickly). If we play well-knowed opening (like the pawn e or the pawn d with the white or with the black) we have a lot of chance to fall in traps and more important we don't really use our brain (just we play the 4th and more first moves because we have read them in a book). So why not playing surprising moves. It will be not the best moves but with them we can understand faster chess. An example (extreme so it is easier to show the idea). We have the white : 1.a3 arggghhhhhh ! [crazy ! said blacks] 1....e5 (black take the center happily) 2. b4 arggghhhhh again 2....d4 (ok, the center is for black). But.... Both players have to use his brain now because there is not a lot of theory after this moves. Then we can see that the bishop of black haven't a lot of space for his development because the white pawn have the diagonal a3-c5. What can white move then ? an important " rule " at the beginning is : ask question to the opponent each time you can. So what piece can we move and who can ask a question ? the rook a1 ? no. the bishop a2 ? yes it can ask a question to the pawn e5. Let's go ! 3.Bb2 it is a fianchetto and the bishop have a good place here. 3....black resign after a so nice demonstration of your chess understanding or 3....black win quickly....try and try again and change History. And you can try the same with the black against 1.e4. A friend of mine in a " real " game against a 2500 elo had the draw with 1....a6. You can try b4.... (Just the pawn f is perhaps a bit too dangerous to move for the moment). We will lost a lot of games but it will be sure we improve a lot and (according to me) more than playing an usual opening. You can try, the worst it can happen is to take pleasure by playing.

antagonistknight 22-Jun-09, 08:32	1.e4 e5 2.f4 the King's Gambit is an attempt by White to clear away Black's central pawn to make room for his own and to clear the f-file for White's rook. Black can either accept the gambit which is the most common reply here on gameknot, decline the gambit or offer a counter-gambit with 2. ... d5. There is a lot of theory behind all three of the major variations, which would take to much time to go into here. Is there a particular one you are looking at? You might look into finding a book on it if you are seriously thinking about adding it to your repertoire. You also might look into World Champion's games that have played it, Fischer, Tal, Spassky and Alekhine I know used it from time to time.
