online databases (pay)
I've discovered that there are more than half a dozen databases on line
that charge for membership. Does anyone have a recommendation (or two)
of which is best? Thanks.

i use these from time to time
www.365chess.com and ;www.chessgames.com are the two i use. The first is the best as it has hundreds of illustrative games to study the variations. There are other larger, more up-to-date databases but they cost more. But no-database can replace taking more time, and effort to study a position with a chess board or two.

thanks
Thanks for the suggestions, bc. I'm busy right now with your suggestion of studying
the two openings I'm focused on at the moment, and the positions that arise in them.

365chess and chessgames offer free database service, but downloading more than one game at a time requires a membership. And chesstempo.com has 2 million+ games.

online dbs
Thanks, jc. I've used all three, but not enough to be able to evaluate
their strengths and weaknesses, or compare them. I'll start paying
closer attention to the details.
