![]() In July 2008 I re-thought my desires for a Gameknot club. I decided upon a club that promoted the learning of chess through the exchange of its principles, theory and history. Further, I wanted a club that stressed the concept of fairness; hence, the name "The Knights of Honor." Unfortunately, I did not realize a GK team by the same name also existed. This is due, in part, to the fact that GK has so many teams and they could not be ordered alphabetically, or at least at that time. Tekoahbaer of the "Mathematics Nerds" team stumbled unto the club and immediately asked for the position of moderator. Because he showed an early interest in the club as well as great enthusiasm, I granted him the role. He quickly became my "right hand," and greatly developed the club's forum with tips, principles, puzzles and an original idea for a "tekoahbaer vs. club" challenge that took off "with a bang." Tekoahbaer came on board in September as my third member when I started actively recruiting members. The club has consistently and steadily grown since. Fortunately for me and the club, we have been blessed with many good moderators over the past year. If my memory serves me correctly, Tekoahbaer was the one who initiated the idea of members-only training. He volunteered to be the first club coach. Moreover, all of the club's moderators, volunteered their time and efforts as a coach. This further developed the club's growth and helped to maintain and sustain its membership. Unfortunately for the club, Tekoahbaer took an indefinite leave of absence near the end of 2008 to pursue a doctorate. Nonetheless, the other moderators joined forces to pick up the slack. More members came on-board who agreed to coach the club's members, some on a one-time basis. In March 2009 I came up with what I thought was another brilliant idea to grow the club and initiated a membership drive. Before the drive officially started, one enthusiastic member started sending new members to the club. I thought to myself, "this is going to be a great means of club participation and subsequent growth." My newest moderator, jbravo58d, even offered to recruit new members without credit toward the drive's incentive--a one-year paid GK membership extension. Then a third participant came forward promising an "all out effort" as he needed the membership renewal to remain a team captain. Although this meant an increased expenditure on my part, $59.50 versus $39.95, I agreed. Finally, a forth and final drive participant came forth to flood the club with new recruits specifically requesting the team captain receive credit for his efforts. While the club increased its membership by approximately 40% in a short period of time due to the membership drive, I could not consider it to be a complete success because only 4 out of an initial 100 and then a later 150 members participated in the effort at all even with what I thought was a fantastic prize. Finally, fatcat2 joined the club in May 2009 and "hit the ground running." Immediately upon joining the club, he requested the role as a moderator. I was a bit reluctant to grant him the role initially because he had not proved himself. On the other hand, Tekoahbaer had made such a request from the start of his membership, and he ended up a great asset to the club. Moreover, fatcat2 indicated an enthusiasm unequaled by any member. Almost before "the ink dried" on his acceptance in the role, fatcat2 began flooding the club's forum with new and innovative ideas and suggestions. He is responsible for most of the forum's successful ideas and challenges. Indeed, between tekoahbaer, fatcat2, edj2, rogubravo, jbravo58d, a host of volunteer coaches, and some active members, the club has "taken off with a bang." It is now the second largest and second most active club at Gameknot. Moreover, with only a couple of exceptions, the club has been listed as one of the 10 most active ones since I actively started recruiting members. I apologize for taking up so much space in this thread. However, my personal enthusiasm for this club continues to grow astronomically. Indeed, I spend approximately 50% of my time here at GK in its administration and forum activities. Yes, I love playing my games; meeting new and interesting people; and making new friends "spanning the globe." However, I also greatly cherish my role as founder of the KOH Club! |

![]() The club has proven to be a great disappointment from its inception. Perhaps I am unfairly judging its success by KOH standards; however, the club's growth has been extremely slow and with the exception of introductions and bigpaul's posts, participation has been nil. In fact, I have made approximately 95% of its posts. Both bigpaul and its other moderator, tom318, have made strides to spark club interest, but thus far our efforts have been futile. I must admit the future of the IST club is grim. In fact, if the club's participation does not significantly increase by November 1, the month of the club's initiation, I plan to shut it down. Its co-founder, bigpaul, is behind me in this decision. |

![]() The club consists mostly of Americans, English, and Western Europeans, but there is a small number of representatives from all over the Earth. Most topics, understandably, are American based, based on world events, and only sometimes specific to a particular topic or different country. I find it very good for personal growth and learning, plus fun for the sake of meeting personalities from around the world. Sometimes it gets contentious. The discussions seem, to me at least, to be much like a chess game... trying to outwit, out maneuver, and "beat" (with better arguments) the other participants. I'd like to see that grow... I know there is a lot of talent out there, just not participating. |

![]() i have been out on the road (philly, romania, new york) for a month, so have not been active. i started the 1A club almost 4 years ago after getting booted out of another gk club for what i perceived to be political reasons. i wanted a place where all ideas and opinions were, if not valued, at least allowed to be expressed. we quickly grew to be the most active club on gk, and have been so with the exception of a few short time periods for the last several years. i think it is because all are allowed to speak their mind... unlike many clubs that have a specific focus, ours is based on the ideas of freedom of expression (within the constraints of gk rules, of course). i am very proud to say that we have never banned anyone and that deletions of threads and posts has been very rare - especially notable when one realizes that we discuss the most contentious topics (politics, religion, god, economics, etc). we have 3 mods besides myself, and we mostly do not need to do much. one issue of sadness is that in spite of our 200+ members, only about 10-15 are regular posters. i guess that is the nature of chatrooms, but i wish more folks would pipe up! |
