Favourite Opening
What is everyone's favourite opening?

Mine is Queens Gambit. I like the chance you have to trap them into a checkmate or take the castle. It also leaves the kings side closed so can still castle and protect my king.

Kings Indian/Modern
As black I like the a6 modern or hippo setup vs e4 and I like to play the kings indian against d4. Similiar ideas of fighting against the centre and both are quite good at getting a decisive result either way   I enjoy the double edged games you can get from it either trying to stomp his king or rout his queenside before your king gets stomped

As white I've recently taken up the vienna (1e4.e5.2Nc3) which sits really well with my style as I have played both the bishops opening and kings gambit so this is an opening thats sort of in the middle taking bits of both which has meant I've picked it up really fast (I beat an IM on my first time bringing it out on a tournament   ) What I really like is I can play agressive f4 lines or quieter g3 lines depending on my current state play.

I'll try to give a rough idea of what they are.

Modern Opening is basically where black plays g6 Bg7 d6 and looks to play c5 or e5 and depending on white he will advance on the opposite side. a6 modern is where I play a6 to play b5 advancing on the queenside, its more double edged than the c6 modern.

Hippo is a variant of he Modern and its for when white tries to crush black and stop him from doing anything but infact just leads to a quiet position that can instantly turn violent. Much like its namesake. The position below is the hippo setup for black vs a typical white piece placement, Its more a system than a set move order.

Kings Indian is very similiar setup but its against d4 and c4 but black brings his knight out to f6 where as he holds it back in the modern.

Vienna is just e4 e5 Nc3 getting the following position and choosing between 3 plans of Bc4 g3 or f4. 2... Nc6 Bc4 or f4 are typically played and against 2...Nf6 3.g3 is typically played. Depends on your mood and I suppose on which variations you have practised and looked at. I have the great benefit of playing Bc4 type positions as a learner up until 1700+ Rating. Then I picked up the kings gambit which is very similiar to the f4 lines. g3 of course is similiar to the kings indians and what not that I play as black.

No doubt I have infact just went and made things even murkier...

My favorite opening used to also be the Queens Gambit, as mentioned in the Knights of Honor Chess Club under my favorite opening thread, but Brigadecommander is absolutely correct because it fails in certain situations. For example, in this game against albinm during a team match I attempted the Queens Gambit when I sacrificed a pawn, but I was not successful because the pawn that I would have got for free was protected by his bishop. This is the game that I played against him. javascript:popa(16326889,0). This failed attempt caused an extremely high level of the, "Fight or Flight" response throughout the entire game, and it caused to me to play so poorly that I had to resign during the middle game. Up until that point, I have always played or attempted to play the Queens Gambit as white.
However, I still like the Ruy Lopez Opening, even though it is not my favorite. That is because I learned this opening during my first coaching game against Jack Stockel at the Clinton Street Center in Pleasantville, where I volunteer.
My favorite opening, however, is the Double Knight Opening because of my coaching game against ubermensch43. With this opening one renders both of the knights during the first two moves. Therefore, this opening involves immediate developmental moves of minor pieces. This opening, however, is not usually feasible because my opponents usually play e4 or d4 after I bring my knight out on the Queens side. In such cases, I bring out the knight on the queens side during the first move. Then I play, either e4 or d4 on my followed by my knight on the kings side. If this happens, I do not know what the opening is called.

I am referring to Nc3 when I talk about rendering my knight on the Queens side and Nf3 when I bring my out my knight on the Kings side. Therefore, my first three moves are usually 1 Nc3, 2 e4 or d4, and 3 Nf3. By the way, this was my game against albinim because I did not copy it correctly before. gameknot.com
