I love illusions that show us just how unreliable our perception can be at times. One of my favorites is the Adelson illusion

Trust me, click on this link and I bet you will not believe that the A and B squares are the same colour!

If you are like me and struggle to believe it, here is how you can test it. Right click the picture and click save as and save the file to your desktop. Then open the file using mircrosoft paint and using the erase tool, slowly erase other parts of the image (leaving the a and b squares of course!) and see what happens...pretty amazing

That is a good example of optical illusion. At first glance, it appears that square A is darker than B because of the green cylinder and shadow effect but the explanation in Wikipedia is very clear that it is of the same color. This kind of phenomenon is not new. Mirage is a kind of optical illsion. For example, in a sunny desert, people will see a pool of water at some distant but when they go there to take a drink, it is no longer there.
