Stealth Invader,

Take your time, going too fast for me.
For white to play 5 Nxf7, He would have to play Ng5 first.
This where 4 0-0......d6 prevents Ng5 and at the same
time defends e4 along with Nc6.

efc8 you are right
The computer would not allow such a move at this time,
but although I can see where d6 opens the c8-h3 diagonal
for the B.
I cannot see why e4 needs more support at this time, or
how it prevents Ng5. Could you please show the moves
separately so I can get a better understanding of that
analysis?

prevents Ng5...
is easy. where 4. ...Nf6 blocks the queen, 4. ...d6 does not and the knight could be captured.

by "e4," I assume "e5" is meant. yes, probably not critical to add additional support. BUT the knight on c6 WOULD then be free to move (not that that justifies the move, though all things considered I still think it is more or less as good as 4. ...Nf6, ).

Correction: e5 instead of e4
the-sigularity
26-Oct-12, 20:39

OK
That was the reason I wrote e4, because you
wrote d6 defends e4. (I see the correction you made.)
But I still cannot see where e5 needs to be defended
at this time.
Also, of course he would not give us the N for free at g5.

I do not believe we should consider moving the Q out early.

If we wait for the d pawn to move later, we may be able
to move it to d5 after 4....Nf6 and 5.d3....0-0, but of course
we need to study the moves he makes to attack before
moving to a precarious situation.

Maybe I should have said controlling the e5 square

Lets continue
We all make mistakes, I probably make more than anyone.
Let's put that behind, and concentrate on the task in hand.

I respect your ability and if you believe d6 is the best move,
then maybe that's what we should do but let's wait and see
what other input other members may have.

I feel confident we will arrive at the best solution by
pooling our ideas, and also, I do not foresee any drastic
disaster in making the move you suggest. (d6)

However, I hope we all agree, that the pawns, once moved
cannot be moved back, therefore we should take special
care before making such a move.

even though...
I think 4. ...d6 is fine, I'll vote for 4. ...Nf6.

Pete, in saying "...maybe that's what we should do but let's wait..." (final post on 27 Oct), stealth-invader may have withdrawn his earlier vote.

If it is 3-3 and you don't want to break the tie yourself, make mine a half-vote for each and 4. ...d6 wins.

Clarification
I said "...maybe that's what we should do but let's wait..."
I am flexible on this issue, but do not withdraw my vote for 4.....Nf6.

The reasons I will go along with 4.......d6, are:

1. efc8 has made a good point when he indicated the Q will not allow
5.Ng5 (although that is not an impending threat in my opinion)

2. I don't believe 4......d6 is a fatal move

3. I want to incite other club members to participate.

4. I earnestly wish we could continue the game and not
procrastinate to the point of frustration.

With these I statements making my stance absolutely clear, I will desist until the next move.

The only thing that I don't like about Nf6 is, black can lose castling rights

@efc8
how does Nf6 stop black castling??

can i change my vote? instead of moving the d6 pawn why not move pawn to h6 to prevent the knight to g5. wont that be a bit better than moving to d6? cause i was thinking if we move to d6 to let the bishop out than he might move the knight to g5 than you move the bishop to e6 i think than you be a pawn short. if im wrong please feel free to tell me.

@joejoe
see my earlier post about h6 not being a good development move at this point

Pete
The reason I made a humble request is because I have to change screens
for the analytical process, and I want to keep my errors to a minimum.

However, I realize I am somewhat impetuous, and for that, I apologize.

I now realize I may have placed a burden on you and again, I am sorry.

what do you think of d4 from white? - good or bad?
if its bad how can we take advantage?
if its good what do we do to neutralise it?

White's D4
As we have 3 pieces attacking against only 2 defending D4, looks like odds are in our favour to take control of centre ?

White 5.d4 is a bad move?

We can neutralize by:
5.d4.........ed if:
6.e6........N-g4

Bxd4
well again I'm going a with a different move. I don't think 5.d4 was a bad move or a mistake. I think it was played hoping for 5. ...exd4 and giving white the potential of control over the e-file, weakening the Kingside pawn force and giving Black doubled pawns on the d file with 2 minor pieces to be moved before the pawns can be together again.
I would vote for Bxd4

good posts
well done twick for identifying why d4 was bad for white.
well done friar for pointing out the weakness of replying exd4.

keep up the good analysis guys
