Mini Tournament
it has been suggested i organise a mini tournament for club members only.
I would suggest 3/5 days per move.
I may play but that would mean rated games and you feeling the full force of my play.

everyone please respond here even if you dont wish to play.

regards pete

Mini Tournament sounds great!
I'll play. Didn't want to be the first to reply for fear I'll get a reputation as a looming vulture

Just found this threat
Sorry, I just found this thread, sitting up at 3.40 am (insomnia) and meandering around the site after finishing all my games!
I'd love a mini tournament. If you aren't playing Pete that would be better for us as far as freedom to comment wouldn't it?
I've applied to change my name. I've retired from Marathon running so decided a new name appropriate. I was tempted by Pete's suggestion of "retiredandlovinit" but have applied for "Zed2" (yet to have it approved).

Non responders
any member who has not responded by the end of this week will be removed from the club.
All made a commitment to participate regularly when joining. Only a few are doing so.

Not many of us
How many do you need for a tournament? It doesn't look like we would have enough unfortunately.

five is enough
we have enough for a 5 player MT. With two more, we could play a 7 player MT.
MTs need 5, 7, 9, or 11. gameknot.com

players so far:

1. bigpeta
2. hogfysshe
3. efc8
4. zed2

Good
I am really looking forward to it
If Pete plays though he wouldn't be able to comment would he?
He would be a very tough opponent.

re commenting
probably no instructional comments while the games are being played.

another option is to have the players annotate their games. these annotations could be posted for others to view after the game is over (though one can annotate as the game is being played as well as after the game; you can edit and revise annotations as much as you want). Once the annotation is posted, Pete and anyone else could comment and there could be as much discussion as necessary. I've had as many as 75 comments made on my annotations, some of the positions being the focus of semi-heated debate. This process has helped my game a great deal.

and the games COULD be discussed on the forum and not as part of an annotation. But personally, I am a big fan of annotations because there are many benefits to analyzing your own game, noting where you may have made a better move, writing down the thinking behind a move, unraveling where you secured a win or got in to trouble, etc. The annotation format is very good for this. People may have very useful comments in response to the things you've said or even re moves or positions not specifically mentioned in your annotation (one doesn't necessarily annotate every move). It is not a problem that the move isn't discussed until after the game is over because you will find that you can remember making the move and what you were thinking at the time.

pardon my rambling

re commenting
as these would be rated games then NOBODY can comment on them whilst they are in progress.
Todd is right. The best way to go is annotations posted for comments.

Sounds Great!
That sounds great. Anything that will help me improve is good. Thanks for the explanation which clarifies things for me.

So sorry
but this social thing just isn't for me, I've dropped of the team I was on and a few of the clubs I was in.
Pete, thank you for all the time you've put into teaching me, there is no way I can repay you but I will try to mentor other as I get the opportunity.

also sorry, but I have to withdraw
I apologize as a mini-tourney sounds like a ton of fun and a great learning experience.

The truth is I would't be able to play 4 add'l simultaneous games at 100% ability, much less 4 subsequent games when the first games finished. (which is how I remember the mini-tourney structure as operating(?)) This is due to time conflicts and having to prioritize career-building.

I wanted to be the 5th participant so as to make this possible for all, and while I was willing to take the ratings hit that would result from many losses, I had to reflect that it wouldn't really be instructive nor fun for anyone if I were to play at reduced capacity.

In general I have much less time for chess than when I joined the group, and if it is appropriate for me to bow out for now for that reason I will understand. I will have taken much from it and would petition to rejoin at such a time as my new career has stabilized and I can resume developing my chess game.

Thanks sincerely, and Pete do let me know what's best,

thanks and best of luck
many run-ins with thoughtless inconsiderate people lately. very refreshing queensknight that you considered the group and yourself fully. Thanks for sharing with us where things stand. Good luck in your pursuit of a Directing career. I think the queen falls too easily in this one www.youtube.com (pardon overdub)

My sentiments also
I couldn't have expressed HF's thoughts better.

thank you :)
Thank you for understanding.

And yes I agree HF! I am often disappointed in the treatment of chess in cinema, (all too often just a set-up for the ominous one-liner "Checkmate," which the losing player never sees coming...) Perhaps one day I will try my hand at representing chess a new way, one more deserved by such a complex, subtle, sophisticated art.

Now MTs must be an odd number so we need both of our new members - snowman100 - rjfsmith - join in if they wish to play.

I think the only way to make it a good learning opportunity is if everyone annotates, at the very least, one of their games and comments on at least one other.

I would set it at 5 days per move.

comments welcome

Never annotated
Hi Everyone, I have never annotated a game but I'm sure I will get the hang of it.
If we are going to start soon I will take myself off the ladder so that I can reduce my games.

Annotation tutorial
I will create a new thread with notes on how to go about a game annotation.
There is an earlier thread which tells you how to enter and post the game annotation.
I suggest you reread that as well.

growing resources
Pete wrote <<<There is an earlier thread which tells you how to enter and post the game annotation. I suggest you reread that as well.>>>

not to be confused with my recent topic "Annotating."

the older topic Pete is referring to, "Posting Game Annotation," is on page two of the forum gameknot.com

Thanks in advance Pete for the new topic. Looking forward to it.
