I'd fathom a guess the fails tried 1. R×a4+ first.
1. Nc5 (no check, zugswang)...b3
2. R×a4#
I believe this puzzle (and others like this) should be solvable in one's head before making moves using a physical chess set. But is a tournament quality set more effective than a computer display for solving such positions in one's head?
