The bishop discovering check by the rook on the open h-file is a very common therme, and all that remains is opening the file.

The point is that Bf8 is a winning move, but will not lead to mate in three

I think you are right, Qxf5 repudiates a mate in 3 and would be the preferred defense to B-f8 which I overlooked
