Why not d4? d4 would still lead to checkmate in two though? Only difference is if it was not checkmate the knight has a better position to attack. Or am I missing something?

If white moves Nd4 as the first move, black has 1...Kf5! and no mate next.

I don't see black's response to Qe5, threatening mate on either f5 or g5.
