Alternative solution
I think this works just as well if the pawn is promoted first, and the black Queen drawn away second. e8 is currently showing as a wrong move.

But 1. e8=Q+, Rg8 2. Rh2+, Kg7 and there is no mate in the next move.

Question
After Rh2, why not Qxh2 instead of blocking?

Thanks iamme2, I should be more thorough! And spydad45, I think you're right - either the take or the block will do - it's mate once the black Queen is off the g file surely...

Continued Responses
iamme2 has black's best move after the Rook checks, since the King would be free to take the Knight if Qxg8, and then he is not easily contained again. If black Queen moves in response to the Rook check, however, then it is not guaranteed checkmate. It would be if black's only choices were to block on h4 or capture on h2, but the Queen can also prolong the game by blocking on h3 and checking the white King; this prevents the quick mate at g8, but leaves black worse off then simply moving the King to begin with.
