Don´t get this puzzle!!!

Why doesn't the black king just capture the knight at the beginning?, and to block the checkmate why not move the black pawn to e3?

still does not explain the protection of checkmate

in the first group of moves the king can get out of check by moving pawn to e3 but that option isn´t available, why?

Pawns can't move backwards

@mindzap: The Black pawn has already advanced to K7. It can't move back to K6 to guard against a check.
