Easier than I expected, considering the solve rate.

Very easy, since White gets nothing for starting with check and, as Black threatens 1...exf3+, White must move the f3 Knight. From h4 he threatens mate in two, avoided only with the Queen ( by capturing the Rooks) which leads to mate by other means.

The fact that black's only possible check move is PxN, draws our attention immediately to the knight and where best to move it. h4 is a great spot as it keeps from obstructing the queen, and adds pressure on g6. All of this makes makes move 1 so natural, you almost can't help but solve the puzzle in very short time.

Agreed.
That pawn attacking the knight was a giant, screaming "THIS IS THE KEY MOVE" sign.

What is amazing about this problem
is not that the solution works, but rather that nothing else does.

With all that power focused on the black kingside one might expect to find multiple solutions.
