![]() is the position after move 33 in Milan Vidmar - Machgielis Euwe, Karlsbad 1929. Euwe (Black) had just moved his Queen to f4 in preparation for Qh2#, which is unstoppable, unless Vidmar can pull a rabbit out of his hat, and indeed he did, as Euwe was not prepared for what came next. 34. Re8+ Bf8 These moves seem reasonable at first glance, since the alternative of Kh7 would be immediately greeted by Dd3+!, causing Black to lose his rook, and all likelihood of winning. The continued play is brilliant. 35. Rxf8+ Kxf8 White needs to force Black's king to a more conducive place for a finish, so his remaining power pieces can come to bear. Note that if instead of taking the rook, Black plays Kh7, he loses his rook (as described above), and if Kg7, White can play Rxf7, which effectively ends the game as well. The continued brilliance? 36. Nf5+! Kg8 37. Qf8+! (Black resigns) (my apologies for flipping the board, I don't think you can force white to always be on the bottom). Note that no matter what Black does, it is mate in one. Kxf8 is met with Rd8# and Kh7 with Qg7#. If instead of moving the King on move 36, and blocking with the Queen or Rook, mate still follows quickly and is fairly academic. |
