• If 1...Kc4, 2. Qc2#
• If 1...Kc3, 2. Rc5#
• If 1...Ke4, 2. Qe5#
• If 1...Ke3, 2. Qe5#
Only in the first case, Q moves & remains on 2nd rank.
Only in the second case, R mates.
In the third and fourth cases, Q mates @ e5: to protect f5R, or to protect itself.
In all 4 cases, the e8N is unnecessary.
