From a retrograde perspective this position is interesting because it can be proven that white can castle either kingside (if white's last move was Ra1) or queenside (if white's last move was Rh1), but never in both directions.

Maybe my point is moot, because the king can never castle in both ways anyway, and we should just assume both castlings are equally valid options. But in this problem it does not matter as castling is not part of the solution

Speaking of castling...
That's the only reason it took me awhile to find the solution; I was looking to incorporate castling as part of the solution! I thought this was a problem I had seen before where 2. 0-0 was one of the lines. If 1. Ra4 Kxh1 2. Kf1 Kh2 3. Rh4#, but of course 1...Kf3 leaves White with no mate in 2.

absolutely
thank you very much for your comment, understanding and studying the puzzle i created. you are absolutely right, i was aiming to the solver to think ahead about castling solution, that's why i put an options both side of castling. it was really means you are an smart chess player, you are a ken observer person. God bless to you and to your family.
