![]() The capturing of black's knight is forced as it threatens to capture white's bishop. Black's king will have an escape route if white's bishop is removed. By checking with the first move and allowing black to return with a possible consecutive checking sequence, white is taking (the checks) as good as it is giving. Perhaps that's the gem of this puzzle. |

![]() 1. Re2 is a good try, but there is no good response to 1...Nxd3+. I was fixated on how to deal with this move. 1. Qxg1 looked promising, pinning the other knight, but after 1...Qe5! White cannot mate in 4. I must say I was not expecting a check for the key move. In most puzzles this would be seen as a blemish, but the move is so counter-intuitive that it's still a worthy puzzle. |
