![]() I have got the impression that it is much less members playing at Gameknot than maybe 10-15 years ago? Back then it was 200-300 members in many of the divisions of the chess league, now it is usually only 30-50 members in each division? If this observation is aligning with the overall trend of players here at Gameknot it has been a significant reduction? Can anyone come up with the number of players here at Gameknot now and in the past? |

![]() I have no idea about leagues, teams, ect, for I have always been a lone wolf on GK and leagues, teams and even clubs do not interest me anymore, especially since the "content"of the clubs is as far away from chess study and enlightenment as the Earth is as far away from the Andromeda galaxy. That is also one of many reasons why some "zones"of chess interest have diminished on GK,but most would not even think of that.Think about any subject you like to be discussed in a GK club and you WILL find it....EXCEPT what the MAIN THEME of GK is really about....Chess!That disinterest speak's volumes even if it is a silent thought. Indeed,it was different years ago and better.I helped many out in my old club, but with retirement and other life avenues,I also put GK on the backburner and mostly turned that burner off. So,the reductions(leagues, teams, ladders and more)may indeed be significant,I do not know as well.Perhaps that link above may help a bit.But IF the reductions are occurring,I think the actual reasons are much more deeper embedded in the karma of many members, past or present. One must reason "why" and that answer may be much more complex. Many complain about everything from trolls to troublemakers on GK,team rating manipulation on the rise and a big difference from when Mike ruled GK to the new takeover when Mike left GK. Other reasons may be more simple, like a member has retired, got married, kids and more and have no time to play online chess anymore. I am from the old school on GK since 2005 and have clearly seen many factors that influence a reduction of members OR their game play being simply left idle, just like mine. Even I have lost GK interest for about 5 main reasons. So,you guys do the math,I studied statistics and even differential calculus when I went to college in my younger years, but it takes much more than math to... "see the light". Au revoir, Joe |

![]() As Joe stated, I’m sure many have moved on due to life’s obligations, health issues or death (I know we have lost a few members this way). I also think that we have had what I call “ghost” or “lite” part-time non-committed members where these are players who joined but were only somewhat interested and eventually moved on due to other more exciting things to do. I would guess (hope) that the remaining members are more committed to playing chess on a regular basis. I wonder what percentage of current members now have a paid subscription, what is the average number of active games per player, and how do these numbers compare to 2, 3, 5, 10 years ago. And yes, we all miss Mike as he took a serious interest in this website for obviously reasons. CK999 |

![]() But once in a great while I return to make a comment or two, then disappear again!I do miss the old days on GK and it just seems that the "aura"of GK has changed and shifted...not to necessarily better things.I was hoping that Enthusiast Gaming would change things for the better with thousands of new players arriving, new blitz players, many new game features and even new types of games...but have yet to see that. But there is always hope.Give it time. I am a life member, but do not take advantage of that life membership and play very little if any games,at least right now. Some blitz, but thats all.And the club scene?:Zero.I am as interested in any of those clubs as I would be jumping into a bin of sewing needles that are standing up.Ouch!!Fine for "others"but not me.Why?My reasons are numerous but the theme of chess is the main one which lacks in ALL the clubs. And it should not take me to "reenergize"that. So,something is "amiss". Take care all! Its 87F(30.5 C) in St Barth today.Time for another retirement drink: My mango margarita with a splash of Chambord raspberry liqueur layered on the top. Au revoir, Joe |

![]() "The forums draw some people to the site. I know I come for the dialogue, and stay for the chess."Unquote. This is true to many, but I feel that things have changed for the worse for two main reasons with a few more reasons added in below which has an impact on members leaving and more. #1: The clubs have distanced themselves away from chess which many looked forward to over the years.I had the better chess club, but had to dissolve it(more than once!),the last time being due to my retirement and not having the drive anymore to add hours of input like I did in the past. No other club followed in my footsteps...unfortunately,even with another club name that states "chess"and another club I will not mention here. Many of my past members are not even on GK anymore. And many of the clubs have only a few members out of the long list of members of that club who actually have an interest in conversing due to "religious transpostions"from other non religious posts. Its the same over and over again. This leads to high levels of disinterest by all but 4 or 5 members of a club.No good.So...having tons of posts does NOT MEAN that the club is "quality"or better than other clubs that have LESS posts! Some members of a club take up ALL or most of the posts leading to high levels of disinterest by 40 other members of the same club! Its actually a vacuum void of input with the "illusion"that the club is lively because of the number of posts by a few.Not so. #2: The GK forums have become a haven for new trolls and other issues that repel many away from GK.Years ago,the GK forum(when Mike was the boss)was full of great posts and wisdom. Now it is awash with a few trolls and others who simply talk trash. Not all the time, but many times. This will also lead to members leaving or showing little interest in the forums. I myself have only recently reappeared in these forums due to some great support by three other GK members who's posts you can easily see against trolls.I would like to post much more about chess in these forums, but are "taken back"by one or two others who follow me around like a sick puppy dog in the forums, while not mentioning my name directly to appear "smart". So,my own help to others is being repelled by a few.And I am not alone in this issue. #3 Has GK really improved much after Mike left?I think not.Another reason why members have left GK.I see everything from not getting responses back from GK,technical issues, the GK blitz having many glitches, problems and more.Sure, its still the best on the internet for chess, but not everyone agree's with that assessment anymore.I know of at least 15 who left for other chess sites. So,its not as much perhaps a big decline in GK members, but not ENOUGH NEW MEMBERS coming to GK.Gaming Acquisitions(or whatever they are called) was supposed to improve and enhance GK,perhaps add many new features to attract new members.I have yet to see that. So,in a sense,I think even many of the members here who have not left GK are simply in stasis or zombie like state and show that by playing zero games and not appearing in these forums or the clubs.Yes,I have been here since 2005 and the "aura"is NOT the same. Best, Joe |

![]() "I strongly disagree with scrubbbing text or whitewashing what has been said and learned". The problem with this statement is that many have been victimized, trolled and been given unfair treatment by one member or more.So deleting the nonsense(not keeping it for all to read year after year)is the SMARTER thing to do!Not necessarily the whole thread, but parts of it which demean a player or insult someone.Otherwise, bad karma and others may follow the same "loaded gun"without learning a lesson from what should have been deleted in the first place!Keeping a "sore thumb"posted for others to laugh or frown upon is simply....nonsense and I for one would have never put up with that in MY club. There IS a time for "scrubbing"and deletions, but others are so intent on "holding on"to everything for really no good reason, that they have become "insensitive"to the thoughs of others for their own blind reasons. So "someone" on this site insists on NEVER deleting anything,no matter how bad. This is dead wrong,period... and yet another reason why members leave clubs or leave GK.But try and tell that to him...it would be like trying to convince someone who has nothing but stone aged wisdom and "stubbornness".Him and I are like night and day and I am glad of that! So,if anyone wonders why some members leave GK and leave the forums and clubs...read above in all my posts! Best, TA |
