oldest here
Is there a way to produce a player list by the earliest member? I would like to know who has been here the longest. Just curious.

Don't know how to get such a list, but a somewhat related topic here: gameknot.com
You must be one earliest members around Skip, Cairo has been here since mid 2001.

January 2001
I noticed a few players who are here longer than Jan 2001: eddy, spymaster, 8888. These are topped by atzii and norain. Here is a link to a forum thread on chesscolony.com which starts of discussing this topic and then tries to figure out under what handle Mike played at GK - that should interest heinzkat

I still insist ...
Probably Mike was here the longest.
Then perhaps his trusty PC. Does that count if it gained sentience After being here?

I don't think we ever did get the "real Mike Nik", so to speak, on that old thread. Could drink it, could eat it but might not want to?! Jello~!
[We don't eat that here. My wife says gelatin has horse hooves in it. Well depending how much gelatin, maybe there is only one hoof. THIS IS ONLY AN OPINION and any resemblance to any product within the factual universe is strictly coincidental . . . ]

But re the Question: Yes there is a way. There is even a legal way. But I'm assuming you mean using your computer. So I know nothing. (The same as about comtupers) But I like the question

Early members of GK
ccmcacollister of course Mike is most likely the earliest player, but his initial handle may no longer be in use anymore...

heinzkat suggested tanman as Mike's handle. tanman must indeed be one of the earliest members as he is registered at GK "before Nov-2000" and the domain gameknot.com is registered 26-Oct-2000 - hard to beat that!

Of interest is the following GK statistic from 5-April-2001:
Total active players: 2141
Total rated players: 268
Total completed games: 4849
Total games in progress: 930

The top-10 of 1-Feb-2001 looked like this:
1. madbg 1582, 2. spymaster 1580, 3. vitly 1531, 4. dasmi 1517, 5. kaczor 1511,
6. fatale 1444, 7. mishkin 1428, 8. ericleerinn 1420, 9. 15101971 1382, 10. soulreaver 1305
dasmi was the player with most played games at that time (43 games).

On 9-March-2001 grandpatzer had taken over the top position in the rating list:
1. grandpatzer 1884, 2. d19dario 1822, 3. hammy3517 1822, 4. sirbismarck 1800, 5. harsha 1789, 6. vamsi 1774, 7. onlyapawn 1747, 8. chandra 1727, 9. knorpot 1726, 10. pxpep 1723

algol ...
That is interesting, and maybe true as well. Can it be verified as authentic, heinzkat or is this circumstantial evidence the totallity for tanman? At least if I had my own gamesite I would have more than one nik available for my own purposes.

But it does not seem to be a nik fitting the riddle of the prior thread. Lets not get into talking food processors here, but it would seem otherwise one cannot drink an entire tanman. ( I have to assume Mike was not watching the SNL Squirrel Juicer skit the night he picked a nik. Of course its possible, but ...

You brought up an interesting point tho algol re defunct niks. To clarify: skipwallace ... are you looking to make a list of the niks of the oldest GK members EVER. Or oldest ones that are still here? (And the same nik active?)

Personally I am just hoping if the thread shows enough activity, then all the really old timers will show up and fill us in. Or someone shows up with a technical answer. I did come up with one idea, but its pretty mundane. We could ask Mike to print a list.
Regards all ...

to clarify
I am looking for a way to produce a list of active members in chronological order as to when they joined. Since I joined in March 2002, I was curious where I was on the list of original members. I started thinking of this while responding to the premimun membership thread.

I am pretty certain GameKnot_com is able to generate such a list... but will he do it, that's the question.

ccmcacollister ...
tag1153 recalls a picture associated with the deleted game_knot. I wonder if the person in that picture - sitting on a bench near the ocean and wearing shades - had a tan? One can drink suntan oil and eat the gel form, but nobody would want to...
skipwallace555
09-Jul-09, 05:31

Yes,
I am sure GameKnot could produce a list, if so inclined. I was hoping there was a way to get it and I was not looking in the right area for it. I guess it is not readily available.

Pictures !?!
Why Yes, Algol ... IMO the picture "On the park bench" which appeared on GK profile of gameknot_com at one time, let us label "Exhibit A"; is probably of the same person who is in the pic, let us call "Mike in someone's house, maybe his own!?" = "Exhibit B" that appeared elsewhere on the Net, in an Article (perhaps an Expose' ?!) regarding 'Gameknot's Founder Mike'(strangely enough). I do believe that Alleged-Mike in for former was perhaps more tanned than Alleged-Mike of the latter photo ... BUT Most Certainly DID have longer hair. And was also shorter, being seated.

Now Exhibit #3, 'Alleged-Mike trying to fix convertible of Alleged-Gata Kamsky under that arch thing by the bay' was provided by a private source here on GK (Very Strangely enough is ALSO known as "Mike" or varied aliases such as "M", "Miguel" and "Not GK-Mike~!" or "Joe Friday" among others) but has not been confirmed by any independent secondary source.

Much mystery remains . . .

Using Heinzkat's top archive link ...
I clicked the old FORUM button there and saw some Niks posted there which were pretty early joiners. EDMASTER is no longer current. CHESSAHOY & DONCAN both Registered Before FEB 2001. One is on Vlad's Impalers & I was wondering if VLAD was not among the first ones?

One can use the list "all active players" published by GK to query the listed registration date. Because of time constraints I limited the search to players with a minimum rating of 1600, i.e. slightly more than 7000 players, approx. 1/5 of the total in the list. Here are the old-timers:

As said, these are only from the active player list with rating 1600+. It would probably be easy for GK to extend the Advanced Player search with a second sort method (now only the rating can be used to sort the search results) based on the membership duration. But it is doubtful that this is in high demand...

By the way, I learned today that old-timer honololou designed the GK logo and old-timer norain the two alternative ones which you can see in the gameknot shop, nice work!

I'm pretty certain honololou designed the "GameKnot" pieces (chess set) as well. How exactly did you get this list??
algol
09-Jul-09, 23:54

Heinzkat
I wrote a little program based on
string strRequest = "http: //gameknot.com/stats.pl?" + strUser;
HttpWebRequest httpRequest = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(strRequest);
and then extracted the data I wanted and exported to Excel for the sorting of the results.

I had to put a timeout between requests as I got errors on the response otherwise. Did not check how fast I could go, just waited half a second before doing the next one. This is why it took about 1.5 hours to get the 7000 players...

Thank You! Very impressive work. It looks like GK lanquished in the begining but started to grow in the latter part of 2001. This is fascinating information but I still wish GK would make this information fully available. I am sure the data just needs to be sorted and made available on a link. Maybe they can divert the resources they have to upgrade Blitz to accomplish this. (lol). Thanks again for your effort.

You are welcome. I noticed that for some members the month registered is a little of from the one listed (cairo for instance said somewhere he joined in July but his page says August, so the pages may not be 100% accurate).

As to the growth numbers without having the players identity, the wayback machine can produce an accurate picture:

5-April-2001:
Total active players: 2141
Total rated players: 268

10-Jun-2001:
Total players: 8965
Total active players: 3676
Total rated players: 589

14-Sep-2001:
Registered players = 11616
Active players = 7202
Rated players = 1538

And later the "Registered players" statistic is given:
2-Dec-2001: 17,744 (completed games 102299)
18-Jan-2002: 21,859
27-Jan-2003: 62,252
26-Jan-2004: 120,369
1-Jan-2005: 235,940
1-Jan-2006: 390,845
7-Jan-2007: 576,810
1-Jan-2008: 709,278
10-Jul-2009: 893,160

This is just a highlight, you can find much more here web.archive.org

It's
Heinzkat to the rescue! You are good man!
Now chances are this handle from the end of 2002 has been deleted...

Now that I think about handles: May be I am Mike?

I could be:
1. You can eat ALGue but may not want to
2. You can drink OL (Danish for beer) but may not be allowed to
3. And together I am a ghoul (al Ghul, the demon star which is actually a close double star) or a programming language (to extract user profiles...)
4. There is no point 4.
5. See point 4.
6. Only problem is I was not around here end of 2002...

As Mike could well be from Finnish origin, has anybody considered that he might be the wizard? The birth year fits Heinzkat's clue. Those who have seen his picture may be able to identify him: www.wizzu.com (which also explains point 4 and 5).
algol
10-Jul-09, 11:29

Riddle...
Thanks to Heinzkat the original riddle is recovered, but what are the chances that the solution is still among the roughly 31,000 active players?

Based on the current trend, GK's registered user count is going to hit the 1 million mark in about 1 year's time (much faster if the blitz is fixed of course). May be at that occasion Master Mike will give us pawns a new riddle and a picture of his celebration event? Will the queen backdrop behind the left hand side menus warp into a champagne bottle? Will there be a prize for the 1-millionth registered user?

No one who got the answer ever posted it on the forums, which was a quite agreement, solve it and enjoy  ).
