My two cents
1. Chess Colony >> Why do I think about ants playing chess?
2. iChess >> It sounds the best of the lot. I imagine myself playing chess on an ipod-like chessboard. Has
this apple-like flavour to it though. And BEWARE, it might "has been" in a few year and a name change will
be needed one more time!
3. Chess Peak >> after a day hiking and climbing in the Alps, I can finally play chess... Not good.
4. Chess Squared >> three s in a row... Not good.
5. GameKnot >> I always liked it.
6. ChessKnot >> sounds also good, you still have th 'k' problem though..

Thank you again for all your suggestions and feedback. After careful consideration, we have one more candidate for all of you to consider: IntoChess.com
Thoughts?

IntoChess
At least better than ichess.com.

...
I'm still in favor of keeping the old name, although I can certainly see the issues. If we must change, ChessKnot would be my choice as well, but iChess wouldn't be that bad if you want to lose the 'Knot'.

IntoChess
Better than iChess or GameKnot.

I agree that iChess may be "dated" in a couple of years.

IntoChess - still does not have the right rhythm and "catch". (does that make sense?)

There is a better way to find a good name. Google has search tools that you can use to find related keywords that are used a lot. Put a couple of them together with a hyphen. For example: Play-Chess.com

Good idea but that might easily be confused with the immensely popular namesake without the hyphen.

...
I like the gameknot name. Aside from the initial hurdles with the k, it becomes easily remembered. If you insist on changing the URL, I like easy19's idea of gkchess.com.

ichess is definitely not a good idea, though. Even though putting an "i" before everything is trendy right now, it won't be that way forever. And when that happens, you'll be stuck with a dated website name.

how about this one
chessmate.com

-incorporates the word "chess" into the name while playing on the word, "checkmate."

Name Change
I don't know what started you thinking you needed to make a change but I think you should KNOT change. Aside from entering legal hassles from Apple for ichess and chess colony ( i think that name already exists) I think you have a great asset in this unique name. I would say keep it and spend your resources on things you have been promising; like upgrade the Blitz Chess.

Please do KNOT change the name.

I agree with skipwallace555. Gameknot is unique.

FWIW
........I like the original GameKnot. I'm an everyday player since '04 and I can't imagine life without GameKnot. Please don't change.

Yes we are used to it of course, but I do not like the name at all. When being introduced to it I indeed thought the website would be a crappy games "portal".

why
I can't figure out why not to keep Gameknot really. It's a great name, and if I say GameKnot to someone with a bit knowledge, he knows it's written with a k. GameNot, just think about it lol.
Would be a funny name though, maybe a new suggestion?

FYI ...
Just in case you were wondering (oh sure. Well anyway...) I believe that "chessnuts" may be taken by a former USCF bumper sticker. (Do ya think they might have Copywrite it!? Remember this is USCF we're talking about here). Of course I do like the association of the pun to "roasting on an open fire". Seems very Chessical for some reason

IntoChess ... I'm kind of neutral on that one. It is very 70's and I am pretty retro that way. Are people still INTO things? If so I guess thats Cool Man ... }8-D

name change
Changing names just for the hell of it is usually a really bad idea - usually you lose membership, not gain. Probably better off to leave it as is

I'll cast my vote for Gameknot
It doesn't have the word chess in it, OMG!!!! Who cares, you have superior rankings when searching for "chess", you have a bunch of subscribers who obviously don't think it's TOO lame, and if you change to any of the other names you drop yourself down into the realms of Chesshere, Chesszone, chesskids, chessclub, professorchess the and every other of the 10 billion chess sites who use "chess" as a part of their domain. Yadda yadda yadda ... Be different!!!

GlobalChess
I still wanna keep GameKnot, it's established. If you really wanna get rid of the K, my wild card is GlobalChess. It's huge sounding and we're consist of chesslovers around the world.

ChessKnot???.....sounds crunchy but delicious.
ichess...just a fad. It will fade.

since we are now making suggestions
rather than voting on the names offered I would like to offer GameKnotChess.com. I am guessing that the point of the change is to make the name incorporate the chess theme. When I first went looking for places to play internet chess the search engine I used at the time listed Gameknot very prominently. I stayed because I liked the feel and the look of the site.

I agree the name is a little quirky but therein lies the charm. I think change for change sake is rather unproductive. If you have a good product people will find you. I am very happy with the soeed in which improvement have bee made; except for blitz chess (don't get me started) the updates and changes have been great.

I do KNOT see any need to make a change

GameKnot #1 on Google
I vote for keeping GameKnot.

Google survery: Searching for
a) "play chess online" puts GameKnot as the top hit
b) "play chess" puts GameKnot as number 6
c) "chess online" puts GameKnot as number 6

Ok, for all the GameKnot fans, let us pose a hypothetical situation:

This website has been called "iChess" since its birth in 2000. Now in 2009, the staff is tired of this name and proposes to us a set of new names, one of which is "GameKnot". Would ANYONE be supporting this name?? No, because it is a very silly one.

Personally,I feel whatever name GK decides upon is fine with me,but lets look at this issue from a different angle and long term.If I was new to playing chess online or I was looking for a better chess site than the one I was on,I would probably be doing a search engine seeking out the best chess site that I can be a member of as compared to all the other chess sites on the internet.Just like a billboard on the highway saying..."the best steak in town",or another sign saying..."the most car for your money, come to...",I think GK needs a name that will really draw the eyes attention and sort of proclaim itself to be the best premium correspondence site.In this way,I really feel that in the long run,a more catchy name is necessary.
I personally do not think that any of the suggested names so far,do the "job"in this way.
Now,I'm going to make some suggestions. There are probably a hundred different variations or adjectives to my suggestions below, better or worse, but you get the main idea.If I was a salesperson looking to bring in more members over the years,I would want a name that "showed"that this site was a "cut above" the rest(and it is),but how do I do this?By calling it ichess?I don't think so!

How about something like the following(with or without the hyphen):
1.Ultimate Chess
2.Five Star Chess
3.Banner Chess
4.Crown Chess
5.Elite chess
6.Premium Chess
7.Best Chess
8.Summit Chess
9.Pinnacle Chess

Feedback?Atleast these type of names symbolize something premium and stand out more(more catchy) and would definitely draw more clicks, thus more members.Who wouldn't want to be a member of the best chess site on the internet?

Now,alot of those names above can be reversed,like....
1.Chess Crown
2.Chess Banner
3.Chess Summit
4.Chess Elite

Ect,ect.
again, just my 2 cents worth! Now compare all those names to something like ichess......
hmmmmm.Do you really think ichess or the other names mentioned above my post are really better?
baronderkilt
03-Jul-09, 12:21

Ultimate Chess has some possibilities~! -OR-
How about "EXTREME CHESS" !

Why not grab Both of those for that matter!

Prefer CrownChess over ChessCrown
tactical_abyss
03-Jul-09, 17:09

Ultimate Chess,Extreme Chess are very good.Banner Chess actually is one that I favor because it represents synonyms of....excellence,first-class,top,number one and leadership.
But no matter how good these names are,I think that the decision has already been made as to what GK will use,and I doubt that my ideas will be utilized...unfortunately.
