2 cents + 2 cents
GameKnot or ChessKnot I like the last one.

Why not two names?
For mine, I would prefer to retain the existing name, but only because it's name recognition, and what I'm used to. I dislike change for change's sake, but I can appreciate that GK might want a name to attract more (paying) subscribers.

So, how about the other names? I don't like any of the other options. Reason? Insufficiently distinctive. You want something that stands out and grabs someone. I won't offer any suggestions here, and leave this response as a vote for the status quo.

Cheers,
Ion

Thanks for the link algol. Schrodinger's Pawn seems much like playing the middle game of the French defense when I'm tired. All the middle pawns go from particle to wave.

different name for gameknot
i would suggest the following (only if its possible):
send a poll/question to every member on the gameknot site through pm or whatever means is easy. i think that way you'll get the best idea of who wants what name.

a vote to keep gameknot
When I was looking at chess sites I tried quite a few - the name I remembered and associated with a good site was Gameknot.

Design by committee is not always a good thing. Nor is trying please everyone a good thing (the episode of when Homer Simpson becomes a car designer comes to mind). GameKnot seems to have come up with enough silly names on its own, and add to that the suggestions made by others here on this forum, I can hardly wait for the unveiling of GameKnot's new name to be met with the same awes and ohs that Homer Simpson's new car received.

New Name or Keep Gameknot?
Why is a new name either necessary or desirable? Perhaps this would have been more important back at the start when the brand was being built. Does anyone remember the fiasco with "new Coke".

GK is a known brand. There is loyalty to it. When most things Chess are retracting GK grows.

Don't throw away multiple decades of success with the brand, just because the name doesn't quite fit. I suspect that hardly anyone stumbles upon GK via a search engine, and that most discover it as I did via a referal which someone wrote down.

Concentrate on making the product the very best. Identity isn't the problem at this point.

Once you have a site established and you want to change the name, you must have a very compelling reason to do so. There needs to be a lot more than just a feeling that a different name would have been better...for you to have a valid reason to actually change it after the fact.

It is a judgment call that only the owner of the site can make. But I will say again that I wouldn't change GK's name. In my opinion, there is no absolutely no valid reason to do so.

Google 'chess online' and you will see GameKnot is number 3 on the list. Anywhere on the 1st page is considered excellent. #3 is fantastic. Don't mess with a good thing.

Search engines work differently than they did even just a few years ago. Content is more important than any name. GameKnot already has the content associated with their name. If you change the name, you will have to reestablish the association with the new name. That takes time that is totally unnecessary at this point.

A good name is only important when you first start the site...or your site has failed, but you want to try again on the same topic by reworking everything. Then and only then it is important to work in the best name possible.

GK has already been a success. Continually improving content is the option that will eventually lead to even better results.

I'm ok with keeping GameKnot but if you feel a change is in order, ChessKnot sounds best. iChess sounds like it's trying too hard to be cool... ChessDome isn't bad either and avoids the silent "k" problem. From your other original propositions, I'd choose ChessColony: it has "chess" in the name, it's easy to remember, no silent "k"; the only "problem" is that it seems a bit too long.

Try chesscolony.com

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that GK started out as chesscolony. Well, it still works to get to GK
