It was not really a complaint - it is more of a feature suggestion. It's always a great privilege to be able to turn off all the new things software developers have worked long and hard for to create.   Just like you kept available the Classic GK look when introducing the Ocean Breeze/Midnight Sun interfaces.

appreciation for GK
KD, I certainly do appreciate all the great features about chess.

@tag1153 Thank you for your kind words!

@3253 It is not quite clear why the FB/Twitter buttons are considered as "ads"? No money exchange hands at
any point -- i.e. they are not paying us for it, or compensating us in any other way. These buttons are also useful
for many players, and we have received numerous requests in the past to provide a convenient way to share
GameKnot games/puzzles/etc. with the world. Also, frankly, it's not like Google/Twitter/Facebook need any
advertising.

We do listen to all feedback of course and are considering moving the Twitter button on the game page to a less
prominent position. We just need to find a better place for it, so that we do not annoy any more of our beloved
users.

@kingdawar You hit the nail on the head there -- because GameKnot has been around for quite some time, there
will always be someone who will complain about absolutely *any* changes and new features. We are aware of
the fact that many players are set in their ways and are perfectly happy with the way GameKnot is, and are
absolutely set against any changes. But we do have to continue to innovate and keep on adding new features,
and also keep everyone happy at the same time. Which is the reason why we kept the classic GK look, why we
kept the legacy board setting around (which is a totally royal pain in the rear to support by the way). I guess we
just didn't realize how many people hate Facebook and Twitter and all that newfangled social networking thing.

This is just a suggestion, but why not have GK put the state as well as the city as an option to fill in on ones profile?Perhaps not everyone has a "state",but then many players do have "states"like in the USA.If one simply puts in their city, well there can be many "cities"across the states and country with the identical names. There might be,for example 15 "smithvilles"in the country and 5 in the same state you live in.Then there are players who may only want to accurately list the state they live in,but not want to mention which city they live in.Whether you live on an island,Europe,Asia or in a small town in the USA,there could still be a a state listing and whether you fill that out or not,it would be an option. Many players like me list their state(s)where the "city"option is,but then that is not accurate.Others I spoke to want to list their state but not place it where it specifies "city".

No big deal,but then,why not?

hey, it's something new
Male/female gender symbols in player profiles
cyberknight999
25-Jul-12, 06:00

another new thing
There is a airplane symbol at the top of the text on the postponement rules page.

Should we expect more little pictures?
kingdawar
25-Jul-12, 08:19

CK999, the plane is also shown on postponing players' pages

Gender symbols
These symbols seem redundant where they are placed. It is a belt and braces situation, telling us the same thing twice. Perhaps delete the written male/female options in the profile settings and just retain the symbols?

Where it would be handy is if the symbols were included to appear in the mini-stats which are brought up by hovering over a player's name in the available games list etc.

Many things on this website (and others) are redundant. There are duplicate links leading to the same page from several other pages, and there is more than one way to do the same thing (for example, we offer the ability to bookmark pages and your web browser offers the same ability). But besides efficiency, there is also usability. There are people (and whole cultures) who are not familiar with the gender symbols, which is why the text is there too. And the other way around — sometimes it quicker and easy to glance at the symbol than to read the word. They also say that variety is the spice of life.

tracking interesting games and keeping the board settings
GameKnot supplies the feature that alerts us to new posts in club threads or in forums like this one.

Would enjoy a feature that allows us to track ongoing games we find interesting without having to go back and back and back (on the "slow" but fascinating combats), and see what if any progress has been made.

Also, I wonder why it is that almost every day now the board color keeps resetting itself;
frankly it makes me doubt that the programming will indeed keep other things intact -- such as the board position.

I would like to see an option where I can type a players name in and then type in something like: 1.d4,d5 2.Bg5 or moves up to say # 10 or some later subvariant move order like 14.Re1,0-0 in that opening and get an immediate read-out if that player ever made that opening move or move order later in the game.Or type in "trompowsky" or "english" and get a list of games he played as that and then a partial PGN readout in a list I can scroll down on!
This is more precise than trying to go to the GK games database and then trying to go through all kinds of games with various players...and then hope its updated ect ect.

Unless there is an "exact" and speedy way to do this and I have missed it over the years?
But I don't think so!?

updating the above posting on "Chess board settings/ Board ". . .
did I say --

"wonder why it is that almost every day now the board color keeps resetting itself;
frankly it makes me doubt that the programming will indeed keep other things intact -- such as the board position."

now the Frequency of this unsettling deficiency has risen to 2 or 3 times A day.

icon that would be good
Just like the green dot indicating a player is on-line, it would be nice if it showed a red dot for players hiding their status

tactical_abyss, unfortunately what you are describing isn't currently possible.

shamash, the chess board settings (and many other user settings) are stored as "cookies" in your web browser. So if your web browser is "forgetting" your settings at random times, that means something is deleting "cookies" or otherwise corrupting them. Unfortunately it's not easy to diagnose such issues remotely, as it could be anything from as simple as the privacy settings in your web browser, to a virus on your computer.

kightgator, thank you for your suggestion, but what would be the usefulness of highlighting players that hide their online status?
knightgator
05-Mar-13, 19:46

gameknot, It would let us know which players are definitely not on-line(no indicator at all), when we would see the red dot, we would know they are hiding their status without having to check their profile page.

Of course I have not fully understood the concept of hiding your on-line status anyway.

I would appreciate anyone letting us know, what the advantage is to hide their on-line status
3253

3253
I used to check the online status of players, noticed that some were not showing their status, and decided to do the same thing myself. I think it's a really good idea to do this, because it's no one else's business.

For one thing, people could track when you're online, and then make their moves when they know you are gone for the day, which is weird. Tracking someone's online activity is a predatory behavior.

If there was a button that showed the status was hidden, then I'd want the option to hide that button. : )

05-Mar-13, 20:33

@3253 in other-words you would rather there wasn't an on-line status, or indicator when you were on-line the last time, or both?

Are you friends with any players, because I believe they know when your on-line, whether or not you are hiding your status, maybe GK can clarify this.

kightgator,
I'm fine with how it is. I like that we can choose the option that we want for ourselves.

We have more than enough fun toys on this site already, not that a few new ones would be a bad idea.
