I prefer rated blitz as well, and I agree with you donfernando.I have a feeling that one day we will see rated blitz on GK,but it is,as you say, more of a corresp.site.There is alot of problems and other issues that arise for GK and its servers and the players themselves with rated blitz. You can still measure your skills to a fair amount of accuracy by keeping account of all your wins and losses and draws against opponents and drawing a conclusion of rating estimate based upon either your opponents corresp rating or like i do....approx 300 points less than their correp rating and give yourself a rating increase or decrease based upon the GK corresp formula. No,its not precise, but from my experience a great number of players average blitz rating is approx 300-400 points less than their actual corresp rating.Mine is about equal, but then,I am not the usual case!
To measure your skills better, there is a vast # of other rated blitz sites you can choose from. Some are free, but the better ones are not free.ICC or Instantchess are pretty good. But I actually get away from those sites to enjoy less pressured blitz chess on GK and try new and experimental openings and tactics that I would not normally do on a rated site. So,technically,I am IMPROVING my blitz skills on GK through UNRATED blitz. That is another way of looking at it!

i_have_arrived , the correlation that you propose between Blitz and Correspondence ratings is very interesting. Similar correlations between Standard and Blitz were suggested based on huge database of players (e.g. ICC players). However, in my opinion there are many difficulties in relying on these correlations. For example, the Blitz pool itself is very wide, spanning a range between 3.0 min to 15.0 min (in most Blitz servers but of course not in the world championship!). This makes it very difficult to assign a single Blitz rating for the player.
Same thing applies to Correspondence. Many players deal with their Correspondence games as if they are Standard or even Blitz (not to mention Bullet!). Which means that in the same game here on GK, one player may be corresponding while his/her opponent is Blitzing.

Yes,this is already understood,self-adjoint.Trying to get somekind of "ballpark idea"of where ones stands in their rating as donfernando seems to want relative to blitz is no exact science. As to the 3 to 15 min,the ballpark calc.is based upon not changing time signatures...say 10 min every game, not bullet and your opponents are always 10 min.So the flux change is not a big part of the equation. In addition,I mentioned about using the corresp rating, but I also mentioned to really suggest using a calc based upon an "assumption"that you should really look at an opponent from the 300-400 minus value. So,if you check an opponent corresp rating and its 2000 and you beat him(in blitz)....count that as a win against a 1700 player in a 10 min game.May seem a bit odd,but from my personal experience,I have seen and witnessed a ton of players blitz rating to be approx 300 and sometimes 400 average points below their regular corresp or OTB rating.Which seems logical since,if a player has hours to play a game or days, then their rating should in effect be higher in corresp(by average)than a 10 min game in the long haul. And I again, have seen this time and time again.

But this is one "theory"and of course is certainly not a big reliable one.But can be used as a general guide, nontheless.Rated blitz is certainly the way to go,to be much more accurate.

It is number one ...
item on my Improve GK list ... to have a rating system added to the blitz/live Chess. It would really make me happy to see that happen.

I like to blitz here because I like the players here best. But for me it has to take a Second Best rating for the blitz here, because there is no rating. Whereas another site has an equal, perhaps slightly superior interface, and Does have Elo rating. So I PAY to play there.

This will always be my favorite site, even though they cannot possibly have all the bells and whistles of other sites, atleast in blitz.I even prefer the board layout/pieces/interface here as opposed to say for example Instantchess. While Instantchess has all kinds of features, they lack a really good resolution type of board and solid pieces.Interesting however,on Instantchess you can actually choose which country your opponents will challenge you from automatically, the rating ranges of your opponents and you can watch a live blitz game in progress. But they are overpriced in my opinion for the other qualities they lack.I stray back there once in a while, but I am not very active there until around winter.

Instant Chess ...
Hi Joe, I've played at Instant Chess also. But mostly for the Fischer Random Chess there. For regular blitz, I prefer GK tho. One irritation there is how often you will get a game of blitz or Random, just to have the player Cancel it, and there was a wait to get a game also.

Another thing here is stealing time from what the clock says, sometimes. eg it may say you have three seconds, but then ZAP forfeits you on time as soon as the opp move arrives. I think every site I have played does experience that, except for Chessanytime . com which uses a program called Timeseal to eliminate lag. And it truly does. Works perfectly so you never lose with seconds still on your clock. So it Can be done. That would be a really great improvement that allows truly Instantaneous move by hovering the piece over intended square, then just letting it Unclick on your mouse, and the move really Is Instant. It is the sharpest interface on the net, that I have ever seen. And has been so for years now.

I wonder why other sites do not fix it, since it can be done ? That is something I expect to see from GK someday tho, since this site strives to be the best. And most often it is.

Craig,
Well,on Instantchess, player cancellations are relative.Perhaps your opponents are cancelling, but not mine.My opponents average over 2200,and those guys usually do not cancel.Perhaps adjusting your rating parameters to not less than say,1900-2000 would minimize cancellations.I'm not sure of the time lag thing....I haven't noticed it alot for sure on Instantchess. But that site originates from Moscow,Russia,so who knows with connections from the other side of the world? As to hovering the piece over the square,ect,ect....Instantchess DOES have that feature,as well as then dropping it down on the intended square as soon as allowed and it DOES allow you to pick up your piece ahead of time and hover it over a square while your opponent's clock is running and its his move.

I simply like that site for blitz because the competition is fierce and you can adjust for opponent rating parameters and even which country you wish to be challenged from....which is a bit unusual compared to other blitz sites. Those Russian players were born with a chess piece in their mouths,so a game against many of those players is cutting edge for me.Its no wonder I come back to GK to play blitz...or should I say blitz "vacation"with less stress.
