Blocked advertising

I invited a friend of mine to join gameknot since we were planning to play some correspondence chess games. He started playing some games already and after finishing a few games, all his functions were blocked due to 'blocked advertising'.

He stopped his ad blocker but was still no longer able to start new games. He even saw advertisements on the page. He tried different web browsers and his smartphone but kept getting this message. Even with my premium account I could not invite him to a game! ("Unable to challenge to a game, player ... is not available for new games")

This is a major bug in gameknot's website. Gameknot should not offer free memberships if they don't allow them to start new games, even without an active adblocker. He could not even post a message about this himself since all his functions on the website were disabled.

I did not know about this advertisements bug on gameknot since I have a paid membership. But I just noticed that I used to play A LOT more free players in the past than lately. Now I understand why.

If this issue will not be fixed I have to continue playing him on another website. Which is a shame because I prefer gameknot since it's a great chess website. Love to hear from gameknot about this and if other (free) players experience the same issue. Hopefully this will be fixed very soon, or they should cancel the free memberships.

It's not a bug. We send a warning to anyone using a free membership, if we detect that the ads are blocked in their web browser. If after about a week the ads are still blocked, we send the second warning. If a week later, and 2 prior warnings, the ads are still blocked, the account is flagged and a premium membership becomes a requirement. Your friend clearly didn't mention the 2 prior warnings they received. It's also as simple to unflag your account as subscribing to a Silver membership for one month, provided the ads are no longer blocked.
