Trapped in Dead Tourney
Hi,

is there any way out of a tourney that no-one is joining? It seems unfair to have a level of membership for a given amount of mini-tourneys, and then have one taken up by being ‘in’ a mini that no-one is joining, and no one will join now it see,s. This one was started in April, I withdrew in frustration in May and here we are in August with still 7 places to be filled. These will not be filled and so a player can be trapped in a tourney and also lose of of the tourneys we are entitled to.

What do others think?

Not that this helps, but I am not in any tourneys and never plan to be in any.I see issues all the time from Time-Outs,not enough players signing up,arguments(including team tourneys)and many other issues. To me,there is no logic in any of it.But to each their own,I suppose. To me,I create my "own tourney".I can hand pick any amount of players independently and create my own personal tourney of attempted wins and draws to gain my rating points.Plus,I do not want to have my profile list any details of team or tourney scores pasted to my profile. That may end up looking like a sore thumb to me and I do not want to end up staring at it.That should be an option that one can click on or off.I gain my rating as a lone wolf and need no others to hold my hands. To me,better strength comes in a singularity form and by closely scrutinizing my opponents ahead of time, sometimes taking weeks to decide who I will play.
Good luck in your future tourneys, however!

MT rule no. 7 says...
... After withdrawing from a mini-tournament, you will still need to finish all games that have already been started for you (i.e. no active games will be cancelled). All remaining unstarted games will be recorded as lost in the mini-tournament table, but will not affect your rating and stats. The mini-tournament will still be marked as active until you finish the remaining games in progress (if any), or for the next 30 days (whichever occurs last), during which time it will count against the number of mini-tournaments you can participate in at the same time according to your membership.

I took a look at open MT list, I think you are referring to "'Who's Whos mini-tournament CCCXXIV". You already finished all the games and withdrew in May, so the MT should not be still marked as active and counting against the numbers of MT you can partecipate in at the same time, according to that rule.

But…
Absolutely, thank you for this. But below is the reply from GK when I asked about it.

Thank you for contacting us regarding this matter. The mini-tournament you have referenced has not
been officially started yet, as not all player slots have been filled. Please wait until all player
slots are filled and it will automatically be marked as completed for you.

Although...
... this one can be an "authentic interpretation" 😁 I still think that GK is wrong. MT rule no. 7 doesn't say anything about the official start of the MT and is clearly stated that:

1) you will need to finish all games that have already been started for you (done)

and that the MT will still be marked as active until:
1) you finish the remaining gams in progress (still done in May)
2) or for the next 30 days (referring to the withdraw, so... at the end of June you satisfied this condition).

I think is just a matter of how has been coded that function, but the way it works and the way it is regulated don't fit IMHO.

Thank you
Ty. I will write to them again, making just this argument. With citation.

Much appreciated

I'm curious...
... about how it will end! Please update us when you got answer from GK.

The mini-tournament in question is not "dead". Due to the requested rating range (1050-1400) and being "high-stakes" with a high entry cost (8 points), there are not a lot of players in that rating range that play mini-tournaments for points and therefore can afford the entry cost to join it. Players can still join it, and will join it, but it will likely take some time (months).

Because not all player slots have been filled, the mini-tournament hasn't been officially started yet. I.e. it hasn't been marked as "started". So it cannot be marked as "finished" for any players, including ones that withdrew. There are a lot of technical aspects behind it, but mainly it has to do with the future games for players that join later on -- all other players have to be present in the mini-tournament, so that the games are properly accounted for and recorded accordingly in the mini-tournament table. There is also consideration for potential abuse here.

Other than waiting until more players join the mini-tournament, another possible solution is to contact the mini-tournament organizer, explain the situation, and request them to officially cancel the entire mini-tournament. They in turn can request the mini-tournament cancellation by contacting the customer support directly:

Thank you but…
…I have twice written to the player in question, and have received no reply. I did however receive a couple of quite ‘forthright’ messages because I withdrew.

So not sure that path is open to me.

Oh dear
I have just tried to message the player in question. But I am unable to as he is ignoring me.

Since last week!

Its this kind of pettiness that impacts on the enjoyment of GK

Anyway...
... since the player who started the MT didn't withdraw, he would not be interested in cancelling the whole tournament.

In my opinion, GK should clarify the rule no. 7 adding this sentence:

In any case, the mini-tournament will still marked as active until all players slots have been filled.

We do understand your frustration as some mini-tournaments are not as popular and it might take some time for all player slots to be filled. However, cancelling the entire mini-tournament should only be the last resort, as it would be even more frustrating to the mini-tournament organizer and other players in the mini-tournament who are ok with the commitment.

Also, thank you for your suggestion, it has been forwarded to our dev team for further consideration.

Another occurrence of this problem
It took me a while to find this thread, but I was sure it was in here somewhere.
I am in an invitation-only tournament for 7 players. There is still 1 space open. All 6 players have finished their games. Until the tournament originator invites a final player, it is an orphan tournament that will always count against the tournament count for the players. It has been almost a year since it was started.
I agree with sodiumattack and honeytrap that if I withdraw from the tournament and finish my games, it should drop from my active list, even if the player count has not filled out.
