"Enthusiast Gaming Announces Acquisition of GameKnot"
September 2, 2021

“GameKnot has long served as a destination for chess enthusiasts around the world to play, learn, and connect,” said Adrian Montgomery, CEO of Enthusiast Gaming. “This acquisition is in line with Enthusiast Gaming’s buy and build strategy for gaming communities, responds to growing interest in chess from members of our Luminosity Gaming roster such as xQc and NickEh30, and capitalizes on recent viewership growth for chess on Twitch.”

I wonder what they'll do to the site and to the community. It's been kind of inactive here, no?

Acquisition
I can’t imagine the new company making too many changes to the operational side of the gaming interface, but i bet they raise the membership prices.

The only change that you'll probably see in the near term is an influx of more chess players, as Enthusiast Gaming has a much larger audience who are, well, computer game enthusiasts.

Although yet to be seen and maybe over a year away,I can agree,to some extent with cyberknight999 that any new owners of GK will raise the prices of membership to help compensate for the price of the investment buyout. This is a standard business practice, and I have seen it happen many times with different company and Fitness center buyouts.
As a life member, that does not concern me,however, but any new owner can also change
whatever they wish, for example, terminate life memberships and make me start paying
at yearly intervals with perhaps two or three years credit. While it might be unlikely,I
would not say impossible.Hope not,for then I will leave and not come back.

Likewise. Good business operates in good faith.

From me to Gameknot founder
Dear Gameknot founder (I believe his name is Mike),

Thank you for starting Gameknot and developing it into what it is today.
It has enabled me to rekindle my enjoyment of the game of chess.
I think, after so many years of working to keep the web site going in the right direction, you deserve a nice retirement, and that is what I hope for you.

Sincerely,
fsud
Life Member, 2005.

Agree
I agree with what fsud stated. This has been a great site! I hope the founders and developers received what they fully deserve! (In all the good ways!  )

Cheers,
Matt

Yes, they’ve done a fine job. I hope that the people who take over can follow their act.

I've noticed rated live chess has been in the works for some time now, but other than that the website has been quite dead since takeover, no? Even if it's going to be top-notch on a technical level, which is going to require a lot of resources and maintenance, who's going to play there? We don't have the player base for it at all. That promised influx of new players will have to come soon. The website needs a community to survive, let alone thrive.

Improvements are not always better...
Personally,I am happy with the way it is now with no big changes happening. For a CC site,
it seems tops to me so does the superior interface and chess boards.I am on the fence if GK
ever gets rated Blitz chess.Rated Blitz chess has its problems, complaints, cheats, opponents
sending vulgar nonsense to one another, then being thrown off the chess site and a host of other issues...I know,I was a member of most of the top rated blitz sites over the years and steer clear of things like rated Blitz.Occasionally,I visit the GK Blitz game room(not often)to play a no pressure unrated game and have never encountered any issues. That would change with a larger influx of Blitz players arriving on GK,once they see the "rated"blitz options. So,keeping
GK CC and NOT improving the Blitz room has hidden advantages and keeps it "clean".
Although, improvements in the Blitz area and other areas could conceivably bring in more
chess players, possibly keeping the price down.

GK acq.
GK has been floundering for the past decade. I do hope more players do arrive! I do remember when GK had over 100K games in progress now it is 30K or so

Friendly regards, GK...

09-Sep-21, it's been two years of this already
"The only change that you'll probably see in the near term is an influx of more chess players, as Enthusiast Gaming has a much larger audience who are, well, computer game enthusiasts."

Nope, that hasn't happened at all. I have only seen decay and dilapidation over the past two years. It's unpleasant to be so negative about things but this new management has left all features to rot. No maintenance/regular updates in *any* sector. Not even irregular updates -- not even one. A totally unserious rated blitz feature was introduced without any interest in diligent bug-fixing afterwards. And the un-acknowledged Cloudflare issues and recurring prolonged downtimes are also extremely worrying. I hope these points will be addressed seriously and GK will be kept alive by people who care. It seems some vital people were laid off or left on their own accord in this transition and no effort to find proper replacements was made.

Definite bugs in the rated blitz as I have found out.Unless I am doing something wrong, but I seriously doubt that.
And I tried going back to unrated and found only 3 to 5 players using it on 10 occassions I entered it.My serious blitz friends will never come here and I will try and make sure of that by telling them.
I have no issues with the usual 2/3 day games, but other things, including contact responses back to me with some PM issues were equal to zero.I'd rather chat with myself in a cave...at least I will get an intelligent echo reflected back to me.The old days with Mike and others were great, but gone now.

Enthusiast Gaming
Just read that Enthusiast Gaming's CEO has just resigned. Wonder what is ahead for GameKnot now.

Hmmm.Pehaps I should not have gotton that life membership not that long ago.
The "life"may be short, especially if a bankruptcy filing comes in and the $$ divided between
all the GK members adds up to 2 dollars each, maybe 50 cents each.Hope not.But I suppose a new CEO can replace the old CEO,so everything may be ok and it may turn out even better.

Mike was smart and left only after doing his research very carefully.
Maybe he is off the beach from me right now in St Barts on of a yacht, sipping a martini and smiling and I would never know it.

I have been a member here since 2005. I think that GK has stagnated over the years and is seldom improved nowadays. I still use it as my main correspondence chess site, mainly because I’m a Lifetime Member since many years. It`s true that the player base seems to dwindle, in the League it is only maybe a third so many participants as some years ago. 😔

haratta...
I am like you as a life member, but I hold the record for life memberships!
See,I quit GK several times since 2005 and came back again. In total,GK offered the life
membership 3 times since 2005.I had quit GK,then rejoined as a new life member again!
Yes....3 life memberships since 2005.So,I must like GK obviously. So why did I quit so
many times?Well, many reasons...lost interest, long world travels in places with no internet,
club wars(if you remember)that disgusted me,stagnation as you mentioned above,
Mike leaving who I could count on to get rid of players(sometimes permanently)
for a host of reasons and of course no really good upgrades here and the blitz sucks
on GK and is full of bugs. That should have been taken care of a long time ago.
There are other reasons, but I will keep those to myself.

As you know,GK was much better in many ways years ago with the members, the better
forums both club and GK forums and more. The good old guys like barondekilt, shamash
and others who were legends on GK and helped other out are passed away. When they
disappeared,my spirit began to lose interest here.Even my club is gone(by my choice)
because I have retired and have lost interest in keeping up with it.

I have my old rating finally returned to 2500+again,but it is hollow to me because GK
is not the same as it was years ago.I actually tried to quit GK not long ago but this time
the GK computer told me that life members cannot delete their membership!!!
That took me by surprise!Imagine that!

So,now,I only play one game at a time,sometimes zero games.Lost interest,I suppose.
I have my favorite Euro Pop star I listen to in my profile and only once in a blue moon
share her with others. But what happens?"Right away" some dummy amateur critic
belittles her accomplishments and calls her a nobody because she did not have a long
string of #1 hits! But she had two #1 hits and a long string of top 10 hits.Gold and
Platinum albums. But see, this is what I have to put up with on GK with some of the
members I find totally disgusting. The moment I share a passion of music with
others in a forum,"someone" has to throw knives immediately and begin that
"dance of negativity and stupidity".This is all part of the equation that makes me feel
the good old days on GK are lost.Something has changed.

Also, there are also far too many free members on GK who expect much but do not deserve
anything in my opinion because they do not support GK,but only complain. All members
at any level should pay to be in GK.This was always a debate, but again,I am firm on
the belief that a chess site will not improve until much higher levels of profit flow
towards it.That excuse of having no $$ all the time is a weak excuse and what is
called...a copout.Pay or leave GK is my motto. What those free members do not
realize is that the paying members keep the free members heads "above water" by
giving GK enough to stay afloat. For,if everyone was a free member, then GK would
have disappeared years ago.

Take care Fredrik
