IMPROVEMENT: Thumbnail view of a specific move
I would like to see a setting where the user can select a specific move number for displaying games via "Thumbnails". Currently "Thumbnails" only displays the FINAL game position which is not very useful.

For example, suppose I'm looking at a player's past game history and I'm interested in seeing their openings after 5 moves. Currently. "Thumbnails" only show the final game position which means I have to open each game and manually backup to the 5th move. Instead, a setting allowing the user to specify which move number to display each Thumbnail would be very welcome!

Perhaps I misunderstand your comment, but when I look at a players past games and click on to that game, their game box appears with all the moves listed and THEN all you do is click on a number, like #5 as you mentioned above. That will instantly show you move #5 or other moves from a new board position on that same box which is clearly shown.Other than that,I must be misunderstanding your idea or question.

My suggestion is not so simple. Suppose I look at a player's "Past Games" and I want to quickly see how many games they played a particular opening. Yes, I could open each game and click on move 5 as you suggest, but that would take forever! It would be more expedient if each thumbnail showed the position at move 5 so I could QUICKLY narrow my search to just a few specific games. And of course the number of moves to show thumbnails would be selectable as a profile setting.

Well...good luck in your quest.Well,in a "particular opening" it is not going to happen.I just thought you meant any opening with any game, not specific opening ones with a Ruy vs a Sicilian for example.

Or perhaps seeing if an opponent used a Panov-Botvinnik Attack in the Caro by move #3 instead of the mainline 3....dxe4.If that is what you mean...GK will never have the resources for that.
Doing detective work is what is necessary, unless there are magicians out on GK that know more than me?

For just general games, random, ect,it does not take forever to simply see any game at random
with any move.I estimate about 3 seconds.Maybe 2 seconds.Again, hope your wish comes true.

If you export your games to the database, you can winnow through all YOUR various openings. There isn’t a provision for doing this for another player’s openings. The closest you could get would be to have them export their games to the database, which only they would be able to search.

The GK database of course reveals all the openings by players above a certain rating, but not the specific user until it’s narrowed down to a single differentiable move.

Yours is an interesting idea. Instead of thumbnails it might be better to list the specific move chains, as they appear in the database. Not sure how that could be implemented. Fun idea, though!
