Use of other databases
Is it considered "legal" to use external databases?

@cerskine
As was mentioned in the GK rules,any opening databases can be used in your games,whether it be GK's or others.Look at it this way: Any opening database is very similar to holding a paperback book on your lap like MCO14 or some opening book.This has always been allowed in any C.C. chess,including the old postal chess.There are some exceptions to the rule like a live C.C. game played at chess.com,but that is a different ballgame completely.Since this cannot be regulated like OTB games(which do NOT allow it),it has been the accepted norm for probably a 100 years.

Some opening books,you must pay for,they are not free.Some other opening databases get upgraded every 3 months or so to keep up on the cutting edge of GM games and theory.Opening databases are far different than using a computer program.But one must have a good chess GUI to download most of the top opening databases.Other databases need no GUI,you just look at a chart that pops up,but I am not here to explain in detail,just give you a general answer.

But again,consulting your game with others,asking advice while the game is in progress or using artificial means to analyze your games while in progress is "verboten".After the game is complete,anything goes,except telling your friend to use the moves you just did at the same time he is playing an active game.That advice is against the rules.
Rules,rules and more rules.

By the way Cole,
You mentioned in your profile about a USCF game.
While I am inactive with the USCF for over 10 years now,I am a life member of the USCF since 1990 and have won many of those C.C. awards and $$ tourneys.I played OTB with the USCF
up until 1989,but have long since left the OTB scene,after I moved out of NYC and not kept up with the Marshall Chess Club.I pop in at the Marshall once every few years now.Met many GM's there as well as attended a few seminars persented by them.Good luck.
